Hey Steve, that's exciting! I used to grow a poinsettia called Lilo. She was just beautiful, but challenged your skills as a grower. If you were a good one, that variety was really hard to beat. Certainly not your run-of-the-mill offering. But if you didn't treat her right, then she surely let you know it. What do I look like? LOLOL. Tibs, I'm sorry you are having such an invasion of those nasty, horrid, icky, destructive insects. This has been one of my lightest years ever for infestations, but I have seen them on nursery stock in town and heard a lot of people complaining this year. They have even left my grape vines and roses alone! I have two ampelopsis however, a relative of the grape, and one of them looks like lace. I think nature's system of checks and balances has given us a payback for our stewardship of the land. We have a family of catbirds constantly working the grounds and they are one of the birds who will eat adult JPs. I noticed the female stuffing bugs into the mouth of a juvenile cowbird. LOL. IOW they had offspring with insatiable appetites. Also each spring our resident skunk families do a job on our turf, much to my dh's chagrin. They mine the soil for JP grubs. It looks terrible after they have ripped up the sod, but they do it quite adroitly, and lift it up in sheets. rofl. Before the spring rains, we just lay the sheets of sod back down and they grow again, sans grubs. Year after year of this and our grub population is well checked and we don't have people's lawns nearby to re-infest us with their adults.

I think it's now fairly safe to say that my yard will not be seriously invaded by the pesky critters. Guess I'm lucky that we bought in a newer development. I can hear the buggers in the older treed areas when I'm in my front yard, but not really in the back garden area. It's actually quieted down a lot in the last week or so. I have found a couple of heads and wings in the garden mulch, but I attribute that to the birds nesting in my ash trees. Wed. evening I did find a live one sitting on the top of hubby's screened seedling cage. Didn't even try to fly away when I walked up to him (or her). My guess is that he was tuckered out & lonely with no friends anywhere within earshot of him. Haven't seen another since then. So ........ keeping my fingers crossed. -- PAM

Just like with plants, animals also can only really be properly specified with the correct scientific name. Common names really don't mean much unless both parties happen to be in agreement about what they want to call whatever they are talking about. That said, here are some common names for some of the creatures mentioned so far: Cicadidae (the most commonly encountered Cicada family with over 2,500 species) = Cicada (a common version of the proper name, at least in the case of the Cicadidae family), Locusts (although not related to many of the insects more commonly referred to locusts), Jar Fly Popillia japonica = Japanese Beetle, Jitterbug Phyllophaga (a genus with over 800 species according to some sources) = June Bug, June Beetle, May Beetle, Scarab Beetle Cotinis nitida = Green June Beetle, June Bug (Wikipedia says this name applied to this species is a misnomer for whatever the heck that's worth.)
