Jane Austen Festival 2012

I have just come home from this year's Jane Austen Festival held in Louisville, Kentucky, where I met two of our posters, Rouan and Rosefolly, plus three of their sisters, a cousin, and a friend. We chatted awhile and then had afternoon tea together.

They wore Austen-style dresses, bonnets, stockings, and shoes and carried fans and reticules. They told me they even had on the appropriate undergarments but refused to show me.

It was lovely to meet them in person. They were, as you would assume, delightful ladies; and we talked about . . . books.

Wonderful! I am envious! And this reveals a previously unknown aspect of some of our esteemed RP members! Okay, enough with the exclamation points, tell us more. Where did the clothes come from? How long have you all been attending these festivals? What exactly goes on there? What kind of a stir did five sisters dressed in period attire make? Tell us more!

Rosefolly made their outfits, including the corsets. I'm amazed. And it was more than just the sisters--there were tons of people, men and women, dressed in period attire. It's a really big deal. There were numerous booths selling stuff and different events to attend. The sisters had just been to a fashion show where they said Mr. Darby was selectively undressed and his articles of clothing discussed.

The event was held on the grounds of an historic house called Locust Grove which was owned by the sister and brother-in-law of George Rogers Clark famous for founding Louisville as well as for his Revolutionary War exploits. He spent his last days at the house. Fortunately, the weather, while still pretty warm, was pleasant with low humidity and a breeze. The hand-held fans were in play, though.

This was my first time to attend and I believe theirs, as well. Two of the sisters live here. They all seem to be dyed-in-the-wool Austenites. I'm really not. I've just read the books and seen the movies and went only to meet the RPers.

The tea was nice. The china was, of course, mismatched; but it was all pretty bone china. Everyone had a different pattern cup and saucer and small plate. Unfortunately, the scones were American style--dry and crumbly--and there wasn't a cucumber sandwich in sight. The food was nicely served on tiered trays and consisted of thinly sliced roast beef sandwiches, egg salad sandwiches, the scones and fake clotted cream, pasties (not sure where that came from), and strawberries. Then you chose from a list of desserts. I had Sticky Lemon Cake which was delicious. Some had chocolate cake, and one had bread pudding with bourbon-caramel sauce, which also didn't seem authentic but looked wonderful. I believe the food was prepared by the local JA Society ladies.

It was an interesting afternoon aside from meeting Rouan and Rosefolly; but that was, of course, the highlight.

I know we've moved on to January landscapes now, but I just wanted to comment on some of the gorgeous winterscapes that I admired but was too busy with holiday stuff to write about. NHBabs, the photos of your trees covered in snow are breathtaking. They look like antique postcards, the colors almost muted to black & white. I love the lights on the spirals too. I love your snow skirt decorated in maple leaves, PM, although I imagine it has disappeared under a much wider blanket of snow now. Isn't it fun to see the animal tracks in the snow, Pixie? It is almost like the snow becomes a hidden camera for activity that otherwise goes unseen. And Claire, your Christmas lights against the backdrop of ocean are magical. Water adds such a dimension of beauty to any landscape, but especially to a landscape of lights; I guess it is the contrast between warm and cold that does it. And your water is the mightiest of all! It has to be wonderful to have the great Atlantic ocean in your back yard. Now moving on to January, and trying to shovel and snow blow myself out of the January snowscape... Nana, love your Mardi Gras table. So pretty with all the colors. The gold pm, napkin rings, doilies and sherbets are so nice on this table. Lovely cp you found! Your new salad plates are gorgeous. Those napkins are the prettiest color purple. I'm tickled your posting pictures. It's not as big of a challange once you 'Just Do It'. As OA said, Do it one more time and you'll be a pro. I still have some Valentines things to put away today at home too. We put all the Valentine decor away last night at the office. We started installing new computers and had to change out some phone displays last night. By the time I got home all I wanted to do is sleep. Must of went up the ladder to many times. One of our computers needs to be exchanged. I might have to check out DT and find some masks so I can set a table if I head to the city this weekend. It was great to see yours and Kathleens MG ts. Rosefolly and I were delighted that Carolyn was able to join us at the Jane Austen Festival. She is just as delightful in person as she is online.

We had a great time at the festival, the weather cooperated with a sunny, warm but not humid day (and we were extremely grateful for that, especially considering alll the layers we had on). Caroline's description of the locale was so good that anything I could add would be redundant so I won't bother. I'll just add that I agree with her assessment of the food and that I would consider attending the festival again some day.

Carolyn, it sounds great fun and almost English. Perhaps the 'dessert' served as the final course of the afternoon tea is a US clue!
I always thought that women in the era of Jane Austen went corsets-free with those light weight muslin high-waisted 'Empire-line' dresses, though I suppose the older matrons would have frowned on the revealing nature of such flimsy garments and continued to wear 'stays'.
Rouan, did you and your sisters wear 'pantaloons' as well . . . if it isn't too indelicate a question?

Veer, no, we didn't have on pantaloons, I'm not sure if pantaloons were in style then; I'll have to ask Rosefolly, she's our resident expert on Regency fashion. The actual layers we had on (regency-wise) began with the chemise, followed by the corset, then the petticoat. The next layer was the chemisette but only Rosefolly and I had those (she made my outfit so whatever she made for me, I wore!). The final layer was the actual dress and the visible trimmings like bonnets etc. Rosefolly made her hat, the rest of us trimmed period correct styled straw bonnets. Another sister made us each a reticule, except for Rosefolly, of course, she already had made one to go with her outfit.

Hi everyone - this is the first chance I've had to logon to a computer. It was a pleasure to meet Carolyn, as you can imagine. She is as delightful in person as she is online. Carolyn is the third RP member I have had the privilege of meeting, the first two being Jankin and Sarah Canary. I do recommend meeting RP friends in person whenever the opportunity presents. My own experience has been uniformly positive.

I don't have a lot to add to the description of the events except one correction. I've been given too much credit. While I made all but one of the corsets, the costume making was shared by me and another sister, with a third bravely making her own despite limited previous sewing experience (and hers turned out very well). About half the attendees were in Regency period dress, many of the costumes excellent, and many of those made by the wearers themselves.

We had a wonderful time, as you can well imagine.

Yes, it was great to meet Rouan and Rosefolly, as well as their family. A few years ago I met Martin and Anyanka in London, and I agree that meeting other RPers is very rewarding. Jan was supposed to join us, too, but she got sick and couldn't make it.

And I didn't think Rouan would mind if I showed you what was going on under those dresses. Here she is wearing chemise, corset, petticoat, chemisette, stockings and half-boots. And to think -- this was much less underpinning than was worn by both previous and subsequent generations of women!

Had to 'look up' chemisette and also wonder if the petticoat is not full-length but from the waist.
I'd love to see a picture of the corsets just to know if they are full-boned, bosom propper-uppers (if that isn't indelicate) or the shorter kind. I suppose they are excellent for deportment but must have been very hot and constricting to wear. Also I presume you try and avoid using any modern 'man-made' materials.
Sorry for all the questions but I find it fascinating.

Hi Vee, You're going to be sorry you asked. I can talk about costumes for hours. Those of you not interested in costumes really ought to stop here.

The petticoats were the hardest things for me to get documentation on. I eventually concluded that they had to hang from the shoulders because there was no waist indentation due to the smoothing effect of the corset, and none was wanted. Beginning a petticoat from the natural waist area would cause the dress to "break" there, ruining the intended line. Most modern costumers adapt a dress pattern for the petticoat. I used an actual petticoat pattern, but one that came without provenance. I used a lightweight linen for Rouan's and my petticoats, but if I had to do it over, would use handkerchief linen to make them even lighter and cooler. Our chemises were cotton batiste and the chemisettes were cotton/silk voile. The gowns were cotton. Our shoes were modern jazz boots that happened to have the correct lines. Rouan's were canvas, and came pretty close to the fabric half-boots worn by Regency women other than the lack of a pointed toe.

As to corsets, this is a subject dear to my heart. I find them fascinating and have sewn corsets for several different eras. Each time period had something quite different they were trying to achieve. We tend to think of the tiny waist Victorians admired. In the Regency they didn't care about tiny waists. They didn't care about waists at all! They wanted uplift and separation of the bust, then a smooth line down to the hips. Very young, slender girls would wear the short corsets you mentioned. The rest of womankind would wear a longer corset, to the waist or to the hip. I suspect that the waist length corset would be worn more frequently by servants and farm women women since it permitted more flexible movement. On the other hand, the long corset would give back support to someone doing heavy manual labor. I was nearly, but not completely, authentic with our corsets. The inner fabrics were cotton coutil, a very stable twill used for corset making -- but not for another generation. I also used a lacing pattern that was from a generation later, instead of the spiral lacing that was accurate to the period. I did this in hopes that my sisters would be able to try the corsets on without help, something that turned out not to be the case. You can put a Victorian corset on without assistance, but not a Regency corset. The shape is correct, the wooden busk in the center front is correct, and the minimal boning is correct. I did use modern steel boning. We frown on whalebone these days. For my own corset I handworked the lacing eyelets, but in the interests of saving time, I used grommets on my sisters'. I also used a cotton/poly brocade on the outer cover. This was the most flagrant compromise I made, but I simply could not find an all-cotton one in the time I had available. No doubt I'll see them all over the place now.

Paula, many thanks for all the information and I am really a info 'nut' and love to know stuff. Your post led me to 'look up' various things. Batiste was a material I had heard of but checked onto a site with many eg's of fabric, either from the past or difficult to get today.
I also found the corset info fascinating. I hadn't realised that they fastened in the front as well as being laced at the back . . .which, of course makes sense if you have the laces stretched to the correct 'tightness' you then don't have to rely on your maid to lace you in each day, with her foot in the small of your back and you hanging on to the bedpost. Did you know that the English 'diarist' John Evelyn in the late 1600's wrote that his little daughter had been 'laced-in' her stays for too long and over-tight. All her internal organs were crushed and she died aged, I think, at about six years old.
In the UK it is becoming very difficult to find shops that specialise in more than the most basic fabrics and even buying a packet of needles requires some detective work. Of course none of this is helped by lack of sewing/needlework classes in schools.
Paula, or anyone, have you visited the costume museum in Bath? I first went not long after in opened. It is part of the beautiful Assembly Rooms. After being badly bombed in WWII it wasn't restored until the '60's. The whole city, despite the tourists, is well worth a visit.

Rosefolly, I, too, am in awe. You hand stitched?!?! And here I felt retro last week when I hand basted a bodice fitting muslin for my toddler niece to try.

Veer, don't know about other's experience but shops with actual dress fabrics are becoming few and far between here. Decorator fabric and quilting fabric abound, but silks and even linens for making clothes are not to be found. I miss most the fabric stores in Baltimore now that I've moved.

I mentioned to Vee off the forum that I buy a lot of my fabrics online. There are still a couple of chains (Joann's and Hancock's). Here and there exist wonderful treasures of independent apparel fabric stores, but I wouldn't bet on there being more than a couple dozen in the entire United States outside of New York and Los Angeles, possibly fewer. The situation with apparel fabric stores resembles the situation with books stores to an alarming degree. The things I love to do are becoming less popular with the mainstream.

I have noticed that there is a small revival of people learning to sew due to Project Runway. Also the re-enacting community along with the cosplay and steampunk people keep at least some sewing activity going on.

And I thought I was to be commended for helping my grandson (yes, son) make an A- on his home ec apron. By his senior year of high school, he had fulfilled almost all his requirements and took home ec at my daughter's suggestion, thinking it might help him while he is away at college. I don't think sewing is one of his gifts, but he can make a mean omelet.

I'm sure all RP'ers , even non-Jane Austen fans would enjoy Bath, especially 'out of season'. Lots of interesting Georgian buildings, the wonderful remains of the original Roman baths, the new Spa built at enormous expense after the old water supply was found to be slightly contaminated.
If you stand still long enough you might find yourself in the latest adaptation of a Regency romance.
Carolyn, I think it is excellent that boys should be taught the rudiments of sewing . . . and cooking.
After many years at school, under a strict regime run by nuns, one thing I came away with was the ability to sew . . . not dress-making and pattern-using, but the down-to-earth skills such as darning, hemming, sewing buttonholes etc. They even ran classes in lace-making. In fact if there was an Olympic event for embroidery I would probably win a medal, but none of that can hold a candle to the sort of work that Rosefolly has shown us.

In the US are you familiar with the London store of 'Libertys'? They sell a wonderful array of fabrics. I haven't been there for years, but I checked on line and they have an interesting and informative site. They even teach you how to make an oven glove via video.

My favorite fabric store in Baltimore carries Liberty Cottons. Love 'em. Miss 'em. I confess I just cannot bring myself to buy fabric untouched. Guess I need to just take the plunge. Encourage me!

Chris, you can subscribe to Vogue Fabrics swatching service. They send you samples four times a year. I just love it. Fashion Fabrics Club used to do this, but unfortunately stopped. They will allow you to buy 1/8 yard samples but I miss the swatching service.

I, too, like to touch fabric before making a decision. I have had both good and pad experiences when I based a decision on a description and a photo. It helps if you know a bit about fibers and weaves/knits, but it's still not the same.

Carolyn, I don't think I have ever eaten a Sally Lunn (aka Bath Bun) nor Bath Chaps (pig's cheeks) or ridden in a Bath chair but I have tasted the famous Spa mineral waters (yuk and double yuk) meant to be a powerful purgative and to cure everything from gout to the vapours . . first you drink it then you swim in it. ;-)

Sewing is very popular in Australia. Plenty of places to buy machines, fabrics and general haberdashery. I don't sew now but used to make clothes for my daughter, mainly simple sleeveless shifts which were from an easy pattern and could be adapted to use small remnants which were sold cheaply. It is now so reasonable to buy children's clothes from China that it isn't worth the bother!

I made a couple of Regency items for our 150th Anniversary of settlement in Western Australia but cheated by remodelling a Laura Ashley print long dress and cut up another short one for a spenser. A straw sunhat cut and resewn at the back to a bonnet shape with long ribbons completed the outfit!
I was so lucky in Bath getting to stay in a room in the Royal Crescent and being shown over the house with its curved sitting room. I felt like a Heyer heroine!

A spenser is a short bodice-length jacket. A longer coat was called a pelisse. There was also a style of women's coat called a redingote, the style based on a man's riding coat.

Siobhan and Rosefolly, sorry, I should have spelled it spenCer! Possibly named after an ancestor of the late Lady Diana, according to the Oxford English dictionary. It didn't say why!
The name also refers to an undergarment I used to wear when I was a child, during the cold weather (it was like a sleeveless bodice) as well as the more elegant long-sleeved short jacket, as Rosefolly described.
I wanted costumes for the recreated occasions which varied from a picnic to a ball so provided myself with the dress and jacket to cover both events. I thought that the Ashley cotton prints, bought from a charity shop, looked authentic for the period.

annpan, I well remember the liberty bodice I was forced to wear during the winter as a child. My brother had one that pulled over the head and was much like a thick vest (in the UK a vest/singlet is an undergarment not the US outer wear which we call a waistcoat). My liberty bodice had hard rubber buttons up the front and even buttons on the bottom edge with which to hold-up stockings . . . dated even then.
I checked about on google and found what looked like a promising site for all-things undergarment and the history thereof, thinking "Rosefolly might be interested in this" but on deeper probing I found it was written by a Melbourne 'cross-dresser' who wore his wife's underwear merely in the interest of 'research'. Felt this was probably an OT step too far. ;-(

This is probably way OT, but recently when I ordered some scanties via Amazon - just regular old undies - I was astounded to discover that apparently panties have become unisex; at least there are many very ordinary brands like Vanity Fair that have a devoted male following. Apparently compared to regular male underpants they fit better, are more comfortable, and don't show. Who knew? Not me!
