Ciao all- Yes, it's raining and that's kind of a buzz kill as far as getting the yardwork done, but we're compensating now for such a dry April and that's a good thing. I've been hardening off some very early tomatoes for a few weeks now and just bringing them into the garage when temps fall below 4C or so or the winds are high. All of the main crop tomatoes are still downstairs. I probably won't start bringing them out until Friday. Peppers, eggplants, and basil won't get planted until the first week of June. Outside, I have Red Russian, Curled Blue Vates, and Dinosaur Kales, American Flag Leeks, Giant Red Mustard, Ruby Pac Choi, Tatsoi, Rainbow Chard, French Shallots, Long Island Improved Brussels Sprouts, Chioggia and Golden Beets, Rainbow Carrots, Daikon and Spanish Black Radishes, Sea of Red, Bronze Arrow, and Forellenschluss Lettuces, Arugula, Super Sugar Snap, Capujiner Blue, Golden, and Oregon Snow Peas. All of these early veggies except the peas have either been harvested or will be very shortly. I've also got tons of herbs and some over-wintered white onions that we've been adding to salads. I'm behind on sowing my flowers, though. Today's a good day to get that going.

Have You Damaged Your New Kitchen Yet?

More of a garage story but we were fostering a pretty crazy dog. We had just built our house about a year or two before. He had already done just about everything to the inside of the house so I thought I will just put him in the garage for one hour while I go to church. What could he hurt in the garage? It's heated and I don't think he can get out. He was an escape artist. If I put him in the yard he could climb the fence and would run down the street chasing me, if I left him in the house he would go insane and tear up any barrier he could to get out. He had severe separation anxiety. After I pulled out I shut the door and let him in the garage. It was winter and one of the coldest days of the year for us here in the south. I had a five gallon bucket of paint and glaze I had been glazing the kitchen with, put it out there and forgot about it some time before. It was just under the windows. I didn't have a fixed lid on it for some reason just covered with foil. He thought it was a stool and was jumping up and down and in that bucket of paint trying to escape through the windows that face out to the front of the house. He managed to tear down both window blinds from the two windows and cover them in the paint. They were hanging off their headers all askew. He then jumped up and down on the garage door which is white as far up as the windows in it, a double garage door covering them in paint. The garage was nice with dry wall and pretty paint and flooring and even base molding he had paint all over the floor and walls and to make it a true heart attack we had just gotten a new SUV that was parked in there and he jumped up and down trying to get into the truck. It was also covered in green paint. When I came home and hit the door opener he ran out covered in green paint I was in shock at the scene!! My next door neighbor who always has his garage door open and had his pride and joy white BMW convertible parked in it. I scream at him CLOSE YOUR GARAGE DOOR!!! My dog was heading to his garage covered in paint. I started running after him in my high heels and dress I caught him and got myself all covered in paint but I was able to hose him off and get him cleaned before realizing in disbelief the carnage in the garage. I felt so mean hosing him down outside in the winter and was terrified the paint would not come off of him but it did. Then when I looked at the garage it was one of those times when you truly did not know how to react, it was an out of body experience. It was a horrific scene and since my husband was out of town I had to figure out where to start on the clean up. It was really a job for Service Master or a hazmat cleanup, lol. I started with the SUV and to my surprise since the paint was still wet it came off, thank God it was latex. It did not come off of the black rubber or plastic bumper areas though, it just absorbed it. Then I tackled the garage door and windows and the people door that leads outside. Pretty good, got that up but it never did come off of the flooring or the drywall which I had to repaint. Then I went to Home Depot and got new blinds for the windows and it was pretty much as good as it was going to get. To this day there is still green paint on the floor out there a little reminder of our crazy rescue boy. My new house was definitely not new anymore!!

Muscat....did you finish grouting yet?

You are both very kind. Dont get me wrong- I'm happy with it, but there are some big flaws. Inky- the plain edges were pretty hard to do, and I should have practiced more on something else first, or found a better technique. It did work out, but I applied and removed caulk three times the first attempt. And the guys at the tile place recommended non sanded caulk- big mistake! I didn't really appreciate that it was a mistake until it was dry. Grrrrr. It was also harder than I expected to get caulk neatly into the space between the granite and bottom of the tiles. It went a lot better when I switched to sanded grout. I used Natural Grey grout and caulk, and they DO NOT match very well. If I had known that, I would have been more careful with grout in some of the corners/edges. As it was, I assumed that they'd match well enough that I could make corrections/smooth things out with the caulk, and that was really disappointing. Also, dispite my best attempts and efforts, I managed to overwork the grout, so it ended up splotchy on the wall behind the range. The other two walls went better, and I just dont know what happened. It wasn't that bad, but then I sealed it all, it stood out even more! And yes, I did test the sealer on my little "practice project" first, and it did NOT do the same thing there. Anyway, I'm OK with others learning from my errors, so here's the embarrassing close-ups:

Welcome, abbey!

I braved the crowds this morning to pick up DH's copy. Didn't look carefully, and he noticed that the dust jacket had a big tear in the spine. Normally he could care less. He waited for an hour to ask if I would mind if he returned it. I just laughed - he's getting like me, with his books! They must be pristine! Anyway, he is happily esconched on the couch reading.

I wasn't going to buy it. Mostly I am just curious. But my DH noted my curiosity and got it for me today. He is such a thoughful man.

I may not read it as quickly as some of you, but yes. I will be reading it.

Yes. I tried to pace myself to savor over several days this, the last installment, but alas! it was not to be.

The woman's imagination and story-telling ability are, as Ron would say, brilliant.

So far it seems like everyone is satisfied with the book. I'm glad to hear it! How long is the book, pages-wise?
Chris_in_the_Valley

About 755 pages.

Just finished an hour ago. Lost power tonight, or rather last night now, so I read the last of it by oil lamp. Fitting, I think. I found it to be a satisfying story, well told. I didn't find the epilogue added anything, however.

I finished it.. I could not put it down.. But I had to sleep for work.. :)

I really enjoyed it a lot. I did get a little teary eyed in some spots...

I think that the epilogue was a little flat too... But I would rather have it there than not..

Excellent!

Just finished it -- and tried to pace myself too -- but just kept on and on ---- a bit draggy in spots -- but some truly magical fights and what a HECK of a movie it will be!! Can't imagine the BIG scene in IMAX format!!

Wonder who will get the nod to direct that final -- and all-important movie??? And wonder if it will get an Oscar?

Add me to the list of finishers. I loved it. I won't say any more, except to agree with the banality of the epilogue.

I can't believe it's over! What a ride it has been. I am sure I will not experience anything like this again in my lifetime (although I would like to!).

Yea, just finished. It was incredible and awesome. NOT A SPOILER - I am depressed simply because, like bijillions of others, I want more and more and more Harry.

And I don't want to read anything else. Nothing.

Say Happy Birthday to Daniel Radcliffe; he is 18 today and had been taken to Lord's cricket ground (home of the MCC) as a present, for the last day of the first Test Match between England and India.
He is a big cricket supporter and was interviewed during the lunch break. Came over as a nice young man, keen to carry on with his 'straight' acting . . .& get the teams' autographs.

Rowling said she wrote the epilogue years ago, when she was starting to write the series. It shows she knew where she was going with the plot lines from the start.

I just finished the book this morning and I thought it was excellent. When the rest of you finish you can join the SPOILERS discussion!

Finished it! It still hasn't arrived from Amazon here in Santorini (DHL - HA!) but, bizarrely, the UK edition was available in the local bookshop.

I've read it, my wife has read it, and I've sold it second-hand to someone who was reading book 6, as my Amazon copy should arrive tomorrow.

Wonderful stuff.

Just closed the book and came here for company. Could not put it down--well, that's been true for all of them. I loved it but am also depressed that this is the last one.

I have to say I don't think the epilogue was banal. Left some intriguing doors open.

Ginny --

Yes, the epilogue DID leave quite a few doors open. If JKR ever thinks of filling out the HP series (post Hallows, of course), then she's got a ton of possibilities! ;-)

By the way, I have to ask -- was your screen name HP derived? ;-)

Martin, I am LMAO that you AND your wife have read it and you've already sold it. I wish I could achieve such efficiency in my own life! ;)

Sorry, Dynomutt, the Ginny name for me came long before HP--tho I was just telling friends at a July 4th barbecue that at long last there was a famous Ginny--my life is complete.

Finished it tonight, a few hours ago.

I wonder how long it has been since so many people all over the world were reading the same book at the same time?

It was fun to be part of it.
