Amazon's development of the Kindle platform has revolutionized reading for tens of millions of people. Many people read steadily but don't have time or interest to go to a library. Kindle versions can be purchased online (and tend to be cheaper than hardcover books). Or, borrowed from a library electronically without having to go to the library. The form factor of Kindles with the ability to carry dozens and dozens (hundreds?) of books on one compact device is unbeatable. I do all my "reading" using audiobooks. The now widespread demand for the audiobook format ensures that essentially all titles are available in audiobook form when print versions are released. I prefer it because it allows me to read while doing other things - exercising, driving, or when eating alone, as examples. A few people I know still need the tactile experience of physically holding a book when reading and for them, the world is unchanged from 100 years ago. We're all different.

The shelving unit would require a face frame to hide integrated lighting, and the shelf depth set back from the back of the face frame. Then LED strips in 45d diffusers placed vertically on each side of the shelving unit. If the shelf length is over 3', the middle may be noticeably dark compared to the sides.

I think I need to know a lot more about this . Why sliding doors for a murphy bed they have great bottomes that hide the bed nicley . Ikea atyle usually does not lend itself to looking like high end wood work and I do not think slapping ligiud wood on them will fool anyone I agree a nice dark moody color for cabinets and walls could work. The cabinets on either side of the door are not good and that whole wall with the dark piece in the middle is the murphy be why not gat a proper unit for the murphy yne design all the cabinets to work with that style . I have added trim to Ikea cabinets to make them a bit less contempory but not some fake wood thing . It is hard to say what your plan in your head is by looking at these pics. Do you have 1000s of books to line the walls . I love a library space but not just slapped up in a bedroom that is nothing like the sapce you want Your bookshelves IMO need to go to the drop down ceiling all the way around. Waht are the cabinets in front of the windows ? This is agood way to do those cabinets and even the drk color is good

Wouldn't you love to work at one of those facilities? Although I am certain I would be fired within hours, probably for hiding somewhere in those wonderful stacks persuing a few chosen volumes -

Have you been to any of these fabulous libraries? I was fortunate in 2006 to be on a tour that included Trinity College's Long Hall. I'll never forget the immensity of that room!

And the volumes - ancient, rare, musty,gems that I would just love to have touched. Ah, the history that room contained!

We were in the Trinity library, too. In fact, my husband took a picture of me there after saying, "This looks like your kind of place."

I have not posted in a very long time and wonder what is being read now. I at present am shifting back and forth between A Voyage long and Strange, by Tony Horowitz, and the complete works of Clarence Day which I always find relaxes me after reading some of the stories of blood shed and wholesale murder carred out by the early explorers in the cause of bringing religion and enlightenment to the original inhabitants of the Americas. I just had my 98th birthday - am I the oldest members on this link? -

Sheer bliss, to see these photos. I was quite favorably impressed by the Library of the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville.

A few years ago we went sightseeing in the Toronto area, and I fell in love with the library at Casa Loma. Not as big as a public library, but I can just imagine filling it with books I love. Grabebd some shots off google:
