Strike for a Kingdom dramatised by Diana Griffiths (Dido) from the book by Menna Gallie.

Will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 at 2.30 - 3.30pm BST. today Saturday 30 June.

It might be of interest to those of us who have inquired about the correct pronunciation of certain Welsh words (much easier heard rather than described)

Siobhan, I enjoyed the play and found it quite moving in places. Did you get a chance to 'listen in'? Hope you weren't defeated by the South Wales Valleys accents.

Best.Show.Ever. I bought the whole series on DVD. My dh loved it too and I'd always call Jonathan R.M. "King Hotness" and dh would just laugh. lol. Moon, I was hoping they'd go through the Kings and Queens after Henry died, but no such luck. Have you seen the movie "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" with Cate Blanchett? It's great, especially on a good TV when they attack the Spanish Armada. There are some great books on Henry's son, cousin (the 11 day Queen, a teenager who was beheaded when she didn't even want to rule!..., and his two sisters who became Queens also.

Based in truth trial shows. I would say it probably beats watching the Casey Anthony trial live all day. I watched for a little while yesterday. I recorded and skipped all the side bars and commercial breaks and recesses and the weird twiddle-lings of defense and prosecution on their electronic devices. Really at this point I haven't seen any thing to make me believe beyond a shadow of a doubt Casey killed her daughter. It was boring beyond belief. If I were a juror I would be tossed off for falling asleep! Good gracious even the judge was yawning. The many videos of Casey shopping, each one had to have a stipulations statement read by the judge that the objections were noted and about them being a true and accurate record of the business. Judge Blevins said bidness (yes bidness, not business) so many times I wanted to put duct tape across his mouth. LIL

Another fan of Miss Marple! I am talking about the BBC series with Joan Hickson as Miss Marple, cause there have been some others that aren't as good. The gardens in that series are always gorgeous too. Oh, if only I could have lots of balmy rain and no 5-below days, then I too could have roses like Miss Marple's, dash it all. But I digress. I love Downton, but, really, the kitchen? I could not work there. Cramped cellar-like space, no exhaust fan or high-btu cooktop. But mostly, I am always surprised at how shabby the Downton Abbey kitchen is, from the pots and pans, to the rickety shelves, to the grimy walls. So, no, I am not a fan of Downton's kitchen! maire_cate -- Oh, I had no idea! Didn't you like the Stringer Bell character at least a little -- the gang leader taking marketing at the community college! West has said that "The Wire" was superior to anything done in the UK. HBO has had some marvelous productions. I was thinking about "The Wire" yesterday as we drove near Englewood in Chicago, trying to find the U of C hospital. I realized I was familiar with some of the street names -- from radio and TV reports of gang shootings on this or that block. Our DIL taught in the inner city and said some of the residents have never been eight blocks from their home address for generations. Englewood is an hour and a half from our home; so near and yet so far.

I did enjoy it very much (although very sad). The accents were a bit challenging for me, but I got the gist of it. The acting is terrific, of course they have great material to work with!

Thanks for listening, Vee and Siobhan. James Robinson is a new producer for me (though I'm still mostly with Pauline) and I thought he did wonderfully well. And yes, the actors were amazingly good - I was so lucky. We had radio 'pick of the day' in both The Guardian and The Telegraph newspapers which I was very pleased about.

Why are your actors so much better in the U.K.? I have puzzled over that for many years. I think one possible answer is they have actual training rather than just being the prettiest.

Not only the accents are different for me, the idiom is quite different as well. Good for me to broaden myself. And no subtitles on the radio!
