I have just bought a set of secondhand wooden dominoes but discovered the double-blank is missing! I don't know the game. Can the family still play with it?
annpan, as you probably remember, old men played dominoes in the pub where it was taken very seriously. As children we just used to play any old how by adding the piece with the correct number of 'dots' to the last piece in the line. The winner was the one who had used up all their dominoes first. I don't think the missing double blank will matter. I suppose I should admit that I have NO competitive spirit and have never been a 'team player' . . . probably why I have never been picked for the football World Cup, Wimbledon, MCC tours, the Commonwealth Games or the Olympics. In this family we even play Scrabble without keeping a score and the DH refuses to join in any board games or cards. ;-)
there are a gazillion different ways to play dominoes-lots of websites with rules, etc. I'm sure there are games where you don't need the double blank-which I think acts as a wildcard.
The standard game of dominoes will work fine for a family game without a double-blank. It's not a wild-card, normally - it just matches other "blanks".
I have two nice sets of dominoes - one is a normal set with 28 pieces (up to a double-six) - the other is a large set with 45 pieces, all the way up to double-nine.
Thanks for that advice, everyone. I do a lot of trawling of charity shops and was asked to find Lego pieces (almost impossible, too popular again) Duplo or similar and board games. Problem is that I have to take pot-luck that these are complete. The domino set is in a lovely satiny blonde-wood box and I thought I had done well until I Googled for the set layout and found I was that one piece short. I am so pleased that it is not important but I will ask at the shop if it is there. I was given two wooden holders as well in case they were part of this set but I think they are for Scrabble!
