Quiet Quest for Scrabble Words

Hi all.

I just got an email from my aunt and she has been selected by her local senior center to be in a Scrabble tournament. She just called me in a flurry because she is not a big Scrabble player. Can anyone help me to help her? As you may have guessed, she is a big big reader, but requested help with words containing the difficult letters: Q, Z, V, and X.

Yes, she could memorize the dictionary, but that would be unrealistic. She needs words she uses in everday conversation that she can remember. Besides, I thought it might be a fun game for us to try and pluck these words from memory.

Can we help her make a list to memorize?

I found the tax shelter in this posting when searching for a gift for my brother. He is a tax preparer and has everything. So I just had to share what I did for him. I took one of those woodcraft houses from Walmart- removed the two screws from the base. I cut a 1" block of wood that fit into the bottom of the house. I glued this block onto the base thus allowing the top of the house to be easily lifted off the base. I cut a 1/2" groove in the center of the block with the table saw so I could set a card of thumb tacks into it. This was hidden in the house until the top was lifted off. I wrote a poem for this & read it to him while my daughter did a Vanna White presentation of the house. Everyone got a good laugh out of this and I finally did a complete craft project! It's been a while. Hope you have as much fun with this as we did. Here's the poem: I drew your name for Christmas It's an honor, don't you know To get my brothers name for Christmas Ah! ashopping I will go. But then I started frettin After searching high and low Whatever will I get 'im (Twas wrong to worry so!) I went into an office shop Maybe something for your desk? I talked to the clerk a lot She tried to aid me in my quest. He could use a tax shelter Is what the lady said It seemed a bit off-kelter But there was nothing left instead. So here's your little shelter All painted so very nice The foundation has been mended The roofs' been polished thrice. The flowers are all blooming In the big pot by the door The bumblebees are buzzing And there's no sawdust on the floor. It seems to be the perfect place I do agree she's right It sure beats a plain old case And your tacks! They're finally safe at night!

Just be sure to look hard at the reviews for whatever Liebherr you are looking at. The home we are renting for the duration of the remodel has a Liebherr, and I loathe it. The ice maker doesn't work (it has broken three times, once it broke a week after it was "fixed"), but of course we can't remove it, and it takes up the vast majority of one of the freezer drawers. It keeps the temperature we set very unreliably. For some reason, it always wants to default to 44 degrees. Water kept in there is not cold enough - and we've already been having to buy bagged ice because the icemaker broke! There's been food spoilage for this reason too. Sometimes we use this "supercool" button that is supposed to cool down the freezer quickly if, for instance, you have just loaded it with a bunch of warm leftovers. So far, it has not worked, but the fridge acts like it is possessed by a spirit who is trying to communicate with us by beeping - loudly - in Morse code. Obviously most people love their Liebherrs and this one is clearly a lemon. Just...check. Best of luck! Bean

Lovely words today! I'd never heard slumgullion, ever! And there are recipes for it posted on the 'net! One that I love but isn't really common enough for general speech is obfusc. Even the dictionaries are unclear [teehee] on the word, though obfuscation is in general use. (Obfusc has a general meaning of murkily dark, though it has some kind of special meaning in music) Then there's subfusc, which means dully dark or dusky. Drab (in its coloration meaning) :) It is also what they call the academic dress at Oxford and other universities that have robes and uniforms. Arcane is particularly useful if your audience knows it, but it's not easily discerned from context. A really handy thing to know are a few Q words that don't require a U. There are quite a few, but these are the easiest. (I'm off on vacation... if I were home I could give you a bunch more.)
