Try to find some Swamp Sunflowers (Narrow Leaf Sunflower) for a showy 2-3 weeks at the end of September. They grow very tall if not cut back in July (prior to buds setting). They look like a very tall yellow daisy or Black Eyed Susan. They don't have the huge center of a classic Sunflower. I trim mine to about 2 feet off the ground in July to keep them from growing to 8-10 feet in height. They end up a gorgeous 5 foot bouquet. The more sun you give it, the more blooms you will get. I grew them alongside the house in Charlotte with no problems in well drained soil. However, they can also handle boggy soil. If in Charleston, pick up a Christmas Senna, Winter Cassia Senna. Gorgeous orchid-like flowers which bloom in November. Your last blooms are during Thanksgiving. The plant dies back in winter but will return. They are found easily in Charleston but I may have had the only ones in Charlotte.

Glad you guys enjoyed those photos as much as me. I feel like I should swarm the blog with comments, to let them know someone out there is listening and inspire them to keep going. I just love the picture of finlaysonii hanging out over the river. And the coriacea seedlings just hanging out on that rockface always make me laugh... and cry. I've tried and failed twice to root this cutting now. -_- It really does look like that plicata is getting some serious sun action. It is flowering in the shade, too, but it's definitely most gorgeous in the sunny photograph. I love those plants! You know, I sometimes get kind of edgy feeling about growing Hoyas in captivity the way I do, like animals at the zoo. Uncertain whether I'm doing something that's ultimately inhumane. But, looking at pictures of them growing in the wild like that, I feel like it's hit and miss with us. Sometimes our plants really do look way more ecstatic growing under our conditions than they might snatching what they can in the wild. And other times, it's clear we can't ever compete with their place of origin. I think I can make my peace with it being a mixed bag.

/David Too funny that you don't like the taste of papaya fruit and grew one anyway. I guess that's the mark of a true lover of plants. Try eating papaya with some fresh lime juice squirted on top - it's key! Thanks for sharing your tips for growing papaya and mango from seed. I really like all the brown tones in the surigaoensis, especially when there are still closed buds nearby. What a cluster! I keep chopping my padangensis, so I'm probably never going to see flowers, but this is one of my favorite Hoya blooms - like tiny water lilies. /Mike I like to use the papaya seeds in salad dressings, although I'm not above simply crunching them beneath my teeth either. A bit bitter that way, not exactly what I'd eat a whole bowlful of, but it's hard not to interact with such pretty seeds. I guess I don't have to worry about worms! My birthday was Monday (May 30 - Memorial Day) and today is my sister's birthday, but I just love the birthday wishes. Thanks everyone! I finally got my package on Saturday, actually today cuz yesterday we were at a Renaissance festival all day.. but WOW!!!!!!!!!!! it was TOTALLY worth the wait!!
