Glass tile install question

I have a new question for this thread...and anyone who can help. I chose a light green glass subway tile for my kitchen backsplash 3 years ago. It's still in a box because my husband, who is usually quite handy (and quite the perfectionist), is terrified of this tile. We will be staggering them so the first question that came up is which side to put the cut edge on (inside and grout or on the outer edge where we will be putting a metal trim edge first). The 2nd question is where should the tile end and begin? Our cabinets are not lined up with the countertops exactly...some countertops are wider than the upper cabinets. My opinion is that the backsplash is suppose to line up with the countertops...the main reason for the word "backsplash" but his opinion is to start them with the upper cabinets which means an inch or 2 of some of the counters will not have backsplash behind them. The third question I have is this: The tile have an obvious shadow too them all the way around the edge. They have I guess a slight bevel? In any case, when we cut the staggered ones on the ends, that shadow wont show. I'm not too concerned with it but it's causing my husbands OCD to flair up. Again, these cut edges will be agains the trim molding we're putting up but they don't "hide" under the molding like we thought...the sit against it. I want the smallest grout line as possible so I can't really tell him to use a massive grout line on the edges to cover it with that.....again...how noticeable do you think it will be in your opinion? Has anyone else installed glass subway tile with a slight bevel that they can give me any pointers? Also, using a diamond blade to cut but the stuff does still chip...why is that? It's a NEW blade. I love what you've done to the bathroom. It's so elegant and serene. That's really interesting about the larger floors tiles bowing in the center, and I'm so glad I read this. I'm having 5"x32" wood grain Castlevetro tiles put down in my studio and the tile salesman didn't mention this. Do you remember where you read this? I looked at some of Bill Vincent's old posts but I didn't see it. I'd like to show that to my installer because he's never put down this type of tile before. I also wanted to do the 1/16" grout line and ordered the sandless grout, but I may have to rethink this. Again, the salesman said there would be no problem with that. Grrrr.

but I do know that sanded is much stronger and hold up better. I think it is intended for 1/8" or wider grout lines. It's not that it's stronger. It's that it doesn't shrink as much, because of the fact that most of its bulk is the sand. As for the explanation of the different grouts, I just posted this in an FAQ thread on the gallery side of the bathrooms forum. Here it is, copied and pasted: Although there are others, for all intents and purposes, there are two kinds of grout-- portland cement based, and epoxy. The portland cement based grouts are the conventional grouts that have been around for millenniums. Although in the last few decades, they've been modified with latex and other polymers to make them stronger and more resistant to mold and mildew, they're basically the very same grouts that have been used since Greek and Roman days. There are two kinds of portland cement based grouts. One is sanded, and the other unsanded. The only difference between the two is, as their names imply, the sand. The ONLY thing that determines which grout should be used is the joint size. NOT the glaze, NOT aesthetics, NOT the material (ceramic vs. glass or polished marble), NONE of those. I'll repeat-- the ONLY thing that determines which is used, is the joint size. Anything under an 1/8" takes unsanded grout. Anything 1/8" or bigger, you use sanded grout. If you use unsanded grout in larger joints, the cement in the grout will shrink way too much as the water evaporates out of it, and the joints will end up shrinking and cracking bigtime. If you try using sanded grout in smaller joints, the grains of sand will literally clog the top of the joint, and not allow the grout to get down INTO the joint, and the grout will flake off in a matter of days. As for the Epoxy, most epoxy grouts use a much finer "sand", and therefore can be used in any size grout joint. Further, epoxy grouts are everything people say they are. They're much easier to clean, practically stainproof, and also extremely expensive. Most epoxies will cost atleast 4 times the cost of conventional grouts, and the installer will also usually charge a premium of between 1.50- 2.50 a foot for the use of epoxy grout. There are alot of people who will disagree with me, but my own opinion is that for most residential installations, epoxy grout is bigtime overkill. The ONLY times I'll recommend epoxy grout is first, if you're installing a tile countertop, and two, if you have animals in the house that either aren't housebroken, or are prone to accidents. In either of those cases, epoxy might be worth the money. For anything else, though, conventional grout is more than good enough.

Well, Serafina, I love the slightly grey look of your tiles . . . very chic and interesting with your black and white. I was going to mention what smilingjudy did . . . that magazines etc. are showing a lot of gray and yellow together and have been for a year or so. I know because I was looking for gray carpeting and have had fits finding it. I can't figure out why I see it everywhere except the carpet stores! I know how hard it is to readjust your vision when you have a picture in mind. I've had to do it on several issues in this house, and it's HARD. I suspect most home-builders/remodelers run into this at one level or another. A couple of mine have been pretty big "levels" and I've had a real struggle: Learn to like it or spend literally thousands of $$ to change it. Only you can make that decision, but I think the color combination you have going is going to be very WOW. Arlene
