I sure don't remember that but even if I saved it that was many computers ago and not everything gets moved from one to the next. I know I was here then because on September 11, 2001 I was stranded in New Orleans on a business trip with The Brothers Karamazov, a book I've never been able to look at since. Was it on the list? I would love to see the list but can't imagine committing to reading on a schedule.

I did not save the list, and barely remember it. Perhaps you could copy and paste it? I'm sure we would all enjoy seeing it.

I remember that I started a thread in which we were working out a list on the topics and books we thought would be required reading to be a modern day "Renaissance Man or Woman". And if memory serves, from that list of topics, we went on to break it down to certain books to read throughout the year.

I also remember that we once tried to all read about a chosen non-fiction topic and then have a discussion about what we learned. The first, and only, topic was The Middle Ages which blossomed into an incredible discussion about the Crusades.

2001 must have been around them time I first joined RP. My monniker used to be VAwoodnymph, until there were some changes afoot, which necessitated some of us to get new names. I do recall regretting that I missed the discussion on the Middle Ages, one of my favorite periods of history. Did anyone save this? I'd like to read it.

Vee, thank you for finding that, it was so much fun to read. I still have my copy of the Idiot's Guide to the Crusades, as I'd always meant to get back to it and read some more ... I'm just easily distracted, I guess, and flit from book to book. I have a stack of books on Druids and Celtic mythology too, as well as a pile of Revolutionary War/Founding Fathers(AND Mothers) books ... I'll have a lot to read someday.

2001 is the year I retired, so I only read the books on the list that I would have read anyway.

Frances, my retirement gift to myself (and I let my husband go, too) was a 28-day Globus tour of the British Isles. On September 11, we were doing the Verger's tour of Westminster Abbey, and all the Americans were asked to step into a small chapel afterward and were told what had happened. There was nothing to do but go on with the trip--we couldn't have gotten home anyway. In many places we visited, when locals heard our accents, they were so kind and expressed their sympathy so quietly and sincerely that I will never forget them.

I didn't do much reading on that trip because we were so busy, but I can understand your aversion to your book.

I have some memory of that schedule but I don't think I followed it. I have, of course, already read many of the books. I remember getting about 1/4 of the way through War and Peace. I also remember the Crusades discussion, one of our best!

vee, thanks for finding the Crusades thread. It makes me feel like reading the little stack of related books I purchased at the time but didn't read. The whole subject was a real eye-opener for me.

Carolyn, I'm glad that you were treated with respect during your trip at such a difficult time. That is probably the only day in my life for which I can remember the exact book I was reading. The bookmark is still marking the page where I stopped.

Looking at that list of RP Archives from Martin, I really miss the book reviews. It was always nice to read more than a couple of lines about a book, and I found writing one a good way to make sure I thought about the book properly before hurrying on to the next one.

I was just reading over some of my posts from that thread - I was a lot smarter then! Can I get back some of those lost brain cells?

I came to RP about 9 yrs ago, which was 2003? Interesting post-I have only read 3 of those books. I do remember the threads on various topics. They were fun.
