Favorite audio books?

Are there any audio books that you highly recommend?

In particular, I'm looking for something that the whole family (youngest is 8) can enjoy together on a long car ride during spring break.

Forgot to say that we have already been through Harry Potter.

The Indian in the Cupboard series of books kept three generations occupied for a 9 hour car ride a few years ago.
A Series of Unfortunate Events audios are apparently very funny for all ages-a mom library patron took some out for the second time a couple weeks ago, saying they had loved them and were off to visit Grandma in a far state again. And there are a lot of them, so they would keep you busy for a very long trip.

If your mom qualifies for the state-run program, she will likely receive, free of charge, a machine similar to one of these in the link. Our program here in AR (Arkansas State Library for the Blind) sent both and asked my mother to choose which one suited her better. Large Braille buttons make them a lot easier to use if you're visually impaired. They will mail you, also free of charge, the audio books that she requests and ours even mailed some that they thought she might enjoy, because we filled out a questionnaire with her preferences. How wonderful to find this site, though I must admit that it took me some time to find one that discusses this subject. The reason I sought it out was because I have been listening to audiobooks for years and they have brought me many hours of pleasure. Like you, though, I find that a book can be absolutely ruined for me by a poor narrator. I can be distressed by an irritating voice as much as the next person but what I find truly disturbing is when words are mispronounced. It is difficult for me to believe that narrators who are considered to be professionals, do not take the time and make the effort to research the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. Another pet peeve, though a minor one, is when a narrator uses the accent of a particular language for a character who is speaking that language. A french person speaking french does not have an "accent" unless that person is french and speaking english. It sounds foolish and often the narrator is difficult to understand in his/her attempt to illustrate the fact that the character is speaking in a language other than english. Other than that, what joy to be able to "read" while doing laundry, vacuuming, working in the yard, etc. :)

Terry Pratchett's novels are wonderful listening. His Wee Free Men and the followups, A Hat Full of Sky and Wintersmith are delightful. Children's books, yes, but so much more.

I love Audio books, I am listening to Water for Elephants at the moment. This one is adult fiction. Go to the library and look at their audios in the youth section

I loved the abridged audio version of The Hobbit, as read by Martin Shaw.

I haven't listened to the unabridged version, but I have The Lord of the Rings unabridged and read by the same actor (Rob Inglis) and it's very good, so I have no doubt The Hobbit would be as well.

My kids and I really enjoyed James and the Giant Peach which was read by Jeremy Irons. Mr. Irons does an amazing job with all of the characters' vioces.
