Get the book. Go to the page where "Gardening by the Moon's Sign" is located. That is a much better guide than the ones they give in the Growing Guide. The moon's gravitational pull on the earth affects our wind, the tides and currents and water levels in ALL things on the earth. Plants and animals also feel this pull because we are mostly made up of water. It also affects the soil, because of the water contained within it. Ancient farmers used Astrology, the placement of the moon and the signs, for thousands of years. We can still apply the knowledge of the ancients who discovered 'astrological gardening' and reap the benefits. Science is after all, only a calculated guess based upon known facts. In the First Quarter, plant annual seeds (flowers & veggies). The Second Quarter is best for sowing perennial seeds, herb seeds and is good for setting out annual seedlings. Sunflowers and melons (& gourds) do well planted in this quarter, too. The Third Quarter is best for transplanting all trees, shrubs and flowers, and for planting below ground crops and sowing root crop seeds. * Ever wonder why sometimes when you plant carrots or radishes, all you get are tops? Planting below ground crops during this phase of the moon will encourage long, straight root growth, but not much growth above ground. I plant my turnips during the 1st or 2nd Quarter, so they will make big leaves and small roots, since it is the leaves I like to eat and not the turnip roots. The last Quarter is a dry, barren quarter. Do not plant during this phase of the moon. It is good for weeding, cutting back vegetation & mowing the grass (so it won't grow back as fast), harvesting root crops, doing repairs to fences and setting posts in the ground. It is good for spraying insects (if you use insecticides) and ridding the garden of all pests. It is a good time for cleaning up your garden, burning debris, tilling the soil & all other garden chores, like laying bricks, cleaning out paths and edging, and etc. Growth is encouraged during the waxing of the moon (between the New Moon and the Full Moon), and is discouraged during the Waning of the Moon (from the day after Full Moon to the day before the New Moon). * You can also use this knowledge to decide what day is best for shaving or cutting your hair, depending upon whether you want to encourage growth or stifle it. Do not plant on the day when the moon changes to the next quarter. It is in flux. Wait one more day when the change is complete. Hope this helps those interested in trying Astrological Gardening. ~Annie

We had one more brief flurry after that. But now, it looks like spring will be sprung soon. I wasn't complaining - I had been disabled by a ruptured achilles tendon since the end of January. Now, it looks like it's going to heal in time for light garden work - what timing!

Jen~I'm saying prayers for the girls. Congrats on losing the 7 pounds. Amy~My parents are planning a trip to the big island soon. I don't know when it is going to be yet. Maddie~[[[[ H U G S ]]]] Congratulations on selling your jewelry. BJ~Please listen & take it easy. Everyone here means well but I know that you already know that. Hi to John, Besh, Susie_que, Kathy, Joanne, Gretchen, & KY Susie. Also anyone else that I missed. Dave's surgery went well. They didn't clean it at all though & did not put a bandage on it. Now you can see how the Veterans are treated! Anyway, we have laughed about it being a face lift. It hurt him to laugh or smile & I tried so hard to be good but he ended up laughing & smiling until it didn't hurt him anymore. He says that he was trying to clean it & a stitch came out. Hmmm... We have 2 weeks from today until his papers have to be in to the VA. (I'm hoping that we make the deadline. If not, let's just say that we have lost the past 4 years of work.) Well, I'm off to eat some salmon. BJ~I wish that I lived near you where we could go to the market & get it fresh. Yum. Patti :)

BJ--thank you for those updates. I have to admit I've felt a little blue ever since reading them, though. I'm sorry to have not been here when happyto lost her husband. I remember that he was struggling with his health. And yes, "yummers." I remember your airplanes, too, and Michelle and I had once exchanged Christmas cards before losing touch. I still remember what her family looked like. I hope everything worked out OK for them. Time really flies. I know your heart is breaking over Baby V. I have a good friend who fostered a baby from the time he was just a couple of weeks old until he was 16 months. She was single, so we (her girlfriends) all pitched in and he was almost as much a part of our family as one could ever imagine. She thought she was on a track to adopt him, but in the very week that the parental rights were to be officially terminated (after which my friend could begin the adoption process formally), his grandmother from 800 miles away applied to foster him. (Not adopt him.) I couldn't believe she would leave him in foster care that long and then just pop in at the last possible moment. My friend tried to make an appeal through the court system at the parents' termination hearing, but she was told foster parents don't have any rights in the relationship. She had to just sit silently, and then hand him over at the end. She was the only mom he had known at that point, and it was devastating for all of us. It could only get harder the more time you have with him, I imagine. But knowing he would be going to a loving home where he would be a priority helps so much. Not the same when he's obviously someone's afterthought. That hurts.
