The problem here is that there's been so much slug killer thrown around that most slug predators (Song Thrushes, Hedgehogs, frogs) are getting very rare. So the slugs no longer have their natural predators, so people put out even more slug poison . . .

A lot of individual gardeners refuse to use slug poisons (me included), but as long as the neighbours still throw the stuff around freely, hopes for a balanced ecology returning are not good.

No lack of slug predators in my garden but that also means no lack of slugs. And snails. There are certain plants that are killed inside a week, some in a single night, if they aren't protected in some way. The only way I've found effective so far is metaldehyde pellets. Nothing I do will ever eradicate slugs from my garden but a small handful of pellets scattered around the sensitive plants stops them getting killed. The only chemical-free "balance" is to not grow these plants. I do find the folk who seem to think the pellets should form an inpenetrable six-inch wall around their garden to be irresponsible and foolish.

Slugs are no the problem by us but snails. There were thousands of them in the trees on the paths up the walls. It was like walking on egg shells as you walked down the road. Slug poison did no good, my garden was eaten alive within weeks. Need to find a solution for this year.
