The Year of the Slug

In 'The Times' there was an article asking UK gardeners to be less active about the abolition of invertebrates - stop poisoning and leave them for the hedgehogs and birds.

For someone who is too Scrooge-mean to outlay good money on toxins instead of plants - and has a busy bunch of blackbirds and thrushes patrolling the garden - this seems a no-brainer. But. Is it a real possibility for many gardeners? (Enough to keep the slug-munchers going...)
