Second titles by Great authors

I am wondering if we as readers tend to have a bit of bias when reading follow up novels by those authors who publish a really popular title ?

Donna Tratt comes to mind. She wrote a novel title "The Secret History" and the book became kind of a cult classic. Much ado about Tratt. She then published a book title "The Little Friend" and everyone complained they felt let down.

I happened to like the second novel better than the first. But, they were very different one from the other.

I feel that we tend to expect something from an author, once we are dazzled and I don't know if we can than be fair when judging his/her newer publications.

In the case of Fraizer....I think Cold Mountian was an outstanding book. I liked his second one as well but it was very different from the first novel. Perhaps it would have been different has his second been his first. To be fair, I think he did a better job writing the first but "Thirteen Moons" was an engaging novel in it's own right, especially were it not being held up to Cold Mountain in comparison.

I just think it is harder for a "great" author to continue to "Wow" readers once he or she has done so.
