"unfinished" compost help

hi there, im a bit of a newbie to gardening having taken over my late mothers garden, and i want to make a rose garden, i have identified the area, weeded it , dug it over tilled it and next spring , March April want to move all her rose bushes to the area. There are about 10 spread all over the garden,
i have been making a compost in an old dustbin and its unfinished, what i would like to do is put the "unfinished" compost in to the prepared area to rot over winter , would you advise me to do this or not, all help is graciously received

I'd put it on now, probably with a serving of blood and bone on top of the soil before I spread it to about 4"/10cm thick. (Hoping all the while that I'll have enough to cover the area... If you don't have enough, then spread more thinly.)

Over winter will be a good time to see if the area becomes waterlogged at all, too. (The puddles stay for hours or days, even after the rain has stopped.) If it does stay too wet then you may need to make a gentle mound on the area and plant on the ridge of the mound.

I'm guessing you've already started the lifting process for the roses and you'll be pruning them back quite hard in later winter (or whatever month is best in your area).

The main thing for now is to give them a feed of a fairly high potash fertiliser (tomato or potato food is good) to help them to harden off for the winter. If they've formed any rose hips, leave them on the plant for now so they don't think they have to flower and set fruit before the cold really sets in.

First...I looked up Abbotsford and you are in the same relative weather area as I am here in Western Oregon. In the interest of full disclosure I have ONLY been gardening for 8 years and I am giving my opinions based on that experience, reading and NOT scientific evidence. How long have you been gardening? It looks like from the photo you will be having to deal with the grasses that border the compost. Was the compost spread over dormant grasses? How long has this been fallow? Here is my advice. In the next couple of weeks we should have a "drying period." Watch the forecast, and at the end of that time work this into the soil. If it is on top of grasses, I would just disk it in. I think if it is on sod, it would be difficult to till and might just spread the grasses. If there is no sod...go ahead and deep till it in and plan to till it a couple of more times before planting (weather permitting). To me, you are one year away form effective gardening on this. Mother Nature will not be rushed, but rather loves smooth steady attention Good Luck PS. What was you compost made of? Compost consisting of animal manures might have the disease pathogens that cause E-Coli, Listeria, Salmonella, and several others and if that undigested compost is used to make compost tea those disease pathogens can be present. All of the produce from your garden will need to be washed very well before using, especially if they are to be eaten raw.

Use unfinished compost as a mulch since that same material mixed into the soil could cause the bacteria to go to work on it instead of feeding your growing plants thereby causing a nutrient deficiency.

Lasagne compost gardening seems to revolve around unfinished compost. I believe in lasagne gardening you layer the uncomposted compost on top. I would not assume your plants are going to have problems now. I can guarantee you that I always have squash seedlings sprouting in my compost, and if they can sprout and grow in my unfinished compost pile I would think you'll be fine. Unfinished compost may not be ideal, but don't assume right now it's toxic!
