does anyone know if all hybrids such as heuchera x tiarella - heucherella and so on, are always sterile, needing vegetative propagation? In animals, interspecies hybrids are always sterile although apparently, there has been inter-species breeding between some south american )I think) monkeys creating a new subspecies. Can this happen in the plant world, anyone?

I don't know what might be possible in theory, but in the world of everyday gardening I would say that vegetative propagation is the only way to obtain new plants.

There are plenty of inter-species hybrids which produce seed. Some of them even occur naturally. Of course that may lead you to question the boundaries of those particular species :)

It's possible, but you'll have to "tie" up your vines and have a strong enough trellis to support the vines + melons + wind blowing. You'll also need to support the melons in a netting tied to your trellis or something similar to hold the melon's weight so it doesn't separate from the vine prematurely.

Note that the rose shown in the piece is NOT 'Souv. de Wooten.' It is 'Radiance.' It has been said of 'Radiance' and her sports that they can be grown successfully anywhere people can live, and if that is an exaggeration, well, it's ALMOST true. :-) Doesn't 'Radiance' look to you to be the color of cotton candy? There is also 'Red Radiance' (which I love), 'Mrs. Charles Bell' (which I like less than 'Radiance') and 'Careless Love,' a striped rose of considerably less vigor than the other three of the "Radiance Clan." (There were also climbing sports, but they seem to be extinct.) 'Souv. de Wooten' was a RED rose. I have seen a contemporary illustration of it, and Bill Grant grows the Climbing version. The version Cliff has was found growing at a deserted homesite near Tehachapi, CA (which no longer exists) by Bert and Kay Grant. Jeri

Hi Lenfocenter/ Your long tubed fuchsia sounds like one of the many triphylla types. Here is a link below from a friend of mine with guidelines on how to hybridize. Not quite the same. Likely, they crossed one parent of the hybrid to something else with a trait they wanted. Then they crossed that back to the origional parent, likely more than once, selecting in each generation. Then they would have inbred and selected. Then made testcrosses to see how hybrids of the new parent do. So the new hybrid might be as little as 1% different from the origional, but the diference should be significant, at least under some conditions. Or it might be as much as 25% different. I can't imagine anything more different than that being given the same name, but I think it would be legal. Walter

Hi Campanula, I posted a reply to you on the allotments site, I don't know if you've read it yet.

I short a cross between a heuchera and tiarella is not an interspecific hybrid (plants in the same genus but different species), it's an intergeneric one (plants from two or more different genera), and these are far less likely to produce fertile plants.

Plenty of plant hybrids produce viable offspring, and so are some animal hybrids, e.g. Glaucous Gull x Herring Gull hybrids in Iceland, Ruddy Duck x White-headed Duck in Spain, Cattle x American Bison ("beefalo") in North America
