tall, late flowering perennials

Can anyone suggest some tall(5ft+) late flowering perennials for the back of a border. They need to be tough as the site is quite exposed. At the moment the only thing that is flourishing is Helianthus Lemon Queen. The strip is about 4ft wide and is a sort of no-man's land between my flower border and my father-in-law's veg patch so I don't want to include shrubs or anything too precious in case it gets rotovated or sprayed off !

How about Rudbeckias? Five foot is about the top size but certainly three to four foot is easy enough.

Which do you think would work better in containers (and would overwinter if the pots were buried in the ground---in my backyard?) David Phlox or Miss Manners Obedient plant? I love everyone's suggestions.... I think these 2 are the front runners now because they would be the most dramatic. I love peach leafed bellflower as someone suggested, but I think it may be too delicate for this spot.

too late to propagate perennials in flower?

I don't know specifically about veronica but here's what I've done with other perennials I want to propagate while they are flowering... Take cuttings as you normally would and just snip the flower buds off. While you are waiting for the cuttings to take root, be sure to snip off any buds that form. So the cuttings don't waste energy on the blooms.

I looked it up and seems that that is its name but I would love to know how they get to where they got to... I have one in a raised bed for potatoes, another three in front of a retaining wall almost inthe lawn, two in the circle flower bed again almost in the lawn and one original location in the back yard. Interesting, there too, almost into the lawn. Is it some nature for that plant to be in annoying locations? Such a great perennial too.... The ones I have seem to mostly be 4 years old. I forget where/when the original was planted....

What about the traditional Michalmas Daisy? Mine are nearly five feet high. They would need to be supported, but then - I suppose - so would most other tall perennials in an exposed border.

Dahlias. I grow 'David Howard', which is 5-6ft high now and smothered with orange flowers. If deadheaded regularly, the show will go on until the first frost. It also has nice dark bronze foliage. Will need some staking!
Verbena bonariensis is still going strong too... And I have a super Macleya (7ft+) The flowers are not particularly showy but it has lovely glaucous leaves.

Acanthus (Bears Breeches), Sunflowers, Hollyhocks, Azara, Verbena Bonariensis, Cosmos, Cardoons and Grasses.
