As I reported before, in Cleveland Ohio, we had the coldest temperatures in 15 years and the coldest average Jan temps since the late 70's or 80's. Officially it was -15F/-26C on the coldest night. The all time record low at Cleveland Hopkins Airport is -19F/-28C back in 1994 so it was BAD, IMO. 7 or 8 other nights below 0F/-18C. Second snowiest January on record in Cleveland- over 42 inches. Cedrus atlantatica- varies, some newly planted ones I see are burned to a crisp, some established plants have very little burn. Mine look good maybe 20% burn facing the sun/wind. Cedrus deodara (cultivar)Eisregen, Karl Fuchs not a bit of burn, I know of someone who has a Polar Winter and he said its fine too. Cedrus libanii Cedrus libanii ssp. stenocoma -fine no burn. Sequoiadendron giganteum - Hazel Smith, Barrabits Requiem, Butnick Yellow look great- no burn. Luzi dead Sequoia sempervirens Abies pinsapo -"aurea" looks good no burn Pinus wallichiana "Zebrina" and "Frosty" look good, no burn. Pinus thunbergii- about 50% burn on Shirome Janome planted fall 08. Cupressus glabra- Blue Ice and Raywoods weeping look great. Abies numidica -Glauca looks great Cunninghamia lanceolata -Glauca, some slight burn, but you have to look hard to see it. Picea sitchensis -Aurea and Papoose are fine, no burn. Calocedrus decurrens The conifers that look the worst in the landscape around the area are the Chameacyparis obtusas. Some of the gold ones look rough. Aside from conifers other "marginals" in z6. Magnolia Grandiflora "Edith Bogue" looks great. M. grandiflora Brackens has some slight burn facing the sun but looks good. Nandina are burned above the snow line. Aucuba killed to the ground.

Hey Katob, I looked at Wal-Mart and they only have the Burgundy and Pink and green Cordylines and I decided to only get a fully green one that would be Cordyline Australis. I have seen that they are the hardiest Cordy. I think the others are 40-50 F at the lowest, and, I am not sure about heating my greenhouse. I am thinking of using a small shelter in the greenhouse and adding heat with lights or a small heater, BUT, I don't want to get anything too tender/tropical also. At least with the Windmill palm baby that I have IF I can keep it in a zone 7b to 8a, it should be fine, and the desert plants are all hardy to zone 5-6. I've got a Cholla tree, Yucca Rostrata, Agaves Parryi and an Agave Neomexicana X ??? I forget the hybrid that is mixed with the Neomexicana Agave. I've had my last Rostrata get too much rain last growing season, so, I have them staying in the greenhouse. I have a Yucca Recurvifolia and another Yucca with the big more fleshy leaves growing in a raised bed with mostly a gritty mix, they are fine despite too much rain. I may need to eventually move my Cholla tree to an in-ground bed, possibly the same bed with the Yucca's I see on the plant tag that it gets about 5 ft wide and even taller. For now, it will be in a medium sized pot. I am kinda wondering about how much to water my Yucca Rostrata. The soil is well draining, BUT, I wonder how moist to keep it. I guess dryish. I used mostly "palm and cactus" soil The Miricle grow stuff. My other stuff is grit, perlite and the bagged Palm and Cactus soil. The Wm that had the Burgundy Cordyline also had one that was green, but, not a normal average green, it was NOT Australis, though. I want another Australis, I may go to Ebay and look. Our Big box stores don't have much to pick from now.

a few of them are supposed to be suited to full sun but mostly cordylines like a filtered spot or part shade.if it says full sun on the tag then chances are they mean in places like vic where most of the tag info seems to be printed fo but in south aus I would go for a more filtered spot.

Sammy... I have to agree with others here.... whether you have Cordyline 'Red Star' or Dracena, neither will be hardy for you in zone 7.... Dracena would need a minimum of zero Celsius, never mind zero Fahrenheit.... it would be long since dead before getting anywhere near that... Cordyline's are hardier but even they need a minimum of zone 8 and would be cut to the ground/probably killed below 15 F... ...I've grown 'Red Star'....'Sundance'... and 'Purple Tower'... all Cordylines, and RS is the nicest of these I thought. They can survive for many years over here in zone 8/9 and reach upwards of 10 foot or more... ..true Dracena's are house plants even over here in zone 8.... in the States they would need zone 10 minimum to grow outside...I would think... ...if it was me, I would take them back to Lowe's and ask for a refund, as you weren't aware they wouldn't be hardy in your area...
