Gardening in the UK

Hello from a newcomer!

Hello everyone. I'm a new member, i've just registered today. I'm very happy i've found this site, because i've just started to get interested in gardening a few months ago. I havent started my vegetable plot yet, but I have everything planed out for next year. This year I grew a few tomatto plants, some pottatos and a few other bits and bobs (all in pots). Well thats all from me for now and I wish you all the best with this years harvest. C ya.

Buzzy - his site is very slow, as you can see from the dates on the postings. Also your gardening conditions will be very different from the UK. Have you looked at the vegetable gardening forum on the US gardenweb pages? Click on Forums at the top of this page and find vegetable gardening. That is much more active and lots of people there have continental climates ie cold winters and hot summers, rather than maritime like us ie wet and gloomy 11.5 months of the year but rarely extremely cold. (Sorry - I'm just fed up with an August of grey cloud, rain and miserable temperatures.)

I went to my brothers house the other day to get some "junk" my mom no longer wanted. He does fencing on the side and in his back 40 he has literally PILES of wooden fencing that he took down and considers trash. I was standing there with my mouth hanging open, looking like a kid at Disney land and he's like "what is wrong with you?" I said in awe and wonder "I'm pretty sure I could make a house with all this wood, if I only knew how!" So, tomorrow I'm headed over there to get my 1st truck-ful to start projects and this is going on my list!!!

A few questions from a relative newcomer

Different locations, soil types, soil ammendments, climate, etc can give you a different appearance... some purple stripes can have less or more color because of this. Fertility & watering can affect bulb size, as well as how long they've been in the ground--usually fall planted in October and harvested sometime in July. I think the bulbils take about 2 seasons/years to get an appreciable size head. The first year they may make a round, and the next year a bulb. Hope this helps. Mark

Welcome, Lavenderlady, I had a lavender plant for several years that never bloomed. A friend suggested that perhaps cutting it back would coax it into bloom. But no, it killed it. Then I bought another plant and it blooms every year. They must have been different varieties, but I don't know what either of them were. Sandy, me too, love to run my hands over the fragrant plants, and share with the granddaughters. Catnip, Sage, Oregano, Lavender, Rosemary in the herb garden and Spice bush and Sassafrass in the woods, Yarrow and Monarda in the field.

The cheapest way to get rid of a cat is to do something to make it remember your yard as a no-go zone. In other words, scare the crao out of it. I had this orange cat stalking around in my yard, trying to catch my birds. One day I looked out, saw the cat in the bushes between my deck and the lawn, so I grabbed an air horn, and slowly sneaked up behind it, and blasted the air horn right behind hit.
