The so-called 'June drop' is perfectly normal and usually persists well into July! Most of the remaining apples should ripen in September over a fairly short period of time. Try and pick them before they fall off.

I've been told that you can keep your Bramleys for future pies by slicing them, freezing them on a flat tray, and then bagging them for freezer storage. I'll be trying that this autumn.

A friend and neighbour has a bramley apple tree and she has a lot of apples that have fallen off. Mainly it was due to the heavy winds we had last week. She has never mentioned that they drop in june at all. She was saying they will be ready the beginning of September, but we also can take into account the really hot few weeks we have had. Maybe they thought they were ready now.
I am also having problems with my apple tree (note the thread below yours) where the apples have all fallen off my cox orangepippin. I still think it could be the birds or squirrel dislodging them as it is always when they are first formed and maybe not strong enough to withstand little feet or beaks.

Apples need to shed early to give an abundant crop in such a good year for htem as this one.

Shake the branches fairly violently a month or so after fruits start to forrm. This should get trid of half of them.

Get rid of a few more around the end of June next time. What you are left with will be a bumper crop on a healthy tree.

If overstressed on year because of ignorance or neglec,t the harvest will not occur again next year in some varieties.

Will persevere with it and look out for a crop in late August/September. Will also try shaking to get rid of some apples in JUne next year and get rid of the unwanted ones all at once.
One last thing - how do I know when the september apples are ready?

They come off easily once they are ready! Sit underneath the tree for a while, and you'll know for sure... :-)

Last year, Lidl sold an apple picker for a ridiculously low price just at the right time of year; if you have a branch near you, it might be worth checking their website to see if they'll do them again. It's just a fabric bag on a long handle, with metal 'teeth' to help pull the apples off. Big help with the harvest!

Strange - I did post a reply but it has gone.
I went out and shook the tree and collected aabout 30 apples, mostly fairly small. I could see that there were some bigger ones higher up the tree.

Sadly about another 10 fell during the next day so it still looks to be dropping them. Is there any chance some of the bigger ones could be ripe or is there still a fair way to go?

Are there still a lot left on the tree? My Cox's Pippin is still dropping them, but there are loads more on which are nearly there. The Bramley doesn't drop anywhere near as many for some reason; again, the apples are nearly full size already.

I think they'll be ripe early this year because of the early summer.

I find they are ready when you can just get hold of them and gently pull the stem. The apple comes away in your hand. With my problem there were no apples left on the tree.

We also have a large mature Bramley apple tree in our Surrey garden (old orchard). We've had good crops every year (we're now in our tenth year here)- and some are bumper crops! It produces large apples that we store in our garage spaced out on open trays. They keep well as long as they are inspected occasionally and any diseased/damaged apples are removed. Apples pies, turnovers, jam, etc, right up to the spring when the store usually runs out! Our tree drops apples from June right up to picking time - and the Lidl apple picker is a great boon!

However this year we have a problem - brown rot has appeared (ugh). We'd appreciate any advice on how best to deal with this disease...please!

My Bramley apple tree has single large red and brown soft spots appearing on the upper part of the fruit, this tree has been in my garden for at least 40 years, and have never seen this before. Could it be a sun and late frost problem, or is it a disease? Hope someone can help please.
