In amongst this riot of form and colour is all to easy to forget the part that native British species can play. Not only are they beautiful, elegant plants that look 'just right' in nearly every garden but also because they are the plants that our native British wildlife is best suited to simply because the flora and fauna of these islands have evolved together ensuring a perfect ecological fit.

I doubt a butterfly or a bird believes in evolution any more than I do, nor are they likely to prefer a local native to a local alien if it tastes OK and is available, any more than I do when I shop at Tesco's.

None the less, it is nice to have a dash of green in the riots of reds, blues and yellows.

It's suprising how many naturally occuring British plants have green flowers. (Not that I can name one.)

Are you saying you don't believe in evolution?

It's not only butterflies that pollinate flowers in the UK, it's flies and beetles too, birds as far as I am aware have nothing to do with polination in the UK, unlike the humming birds in the Americas and other honey feeders.

Native insects are far more likely to pollinate native plants, its all to do with the physiology of the insect and the plants have honey guides that are invisible to the human eye, but clear to the spectrum seen by insects.

Some of the man-made hybrids are poor seed setter because they have been bred for our eyes and not the pollinators, so wiggly wigglers are totally correct.

Pollination biology is a fascinating subject and far more complex than you seem to be giving it credit for.

Dandelions, eh? Beautiful flower and similar to Doronicum,LOL But they aren't "what's wrong" with your Doronicum,LOL...they just look like your Doronicums! Hey, don't the British plant dandelions as 'specimen' plants? Seems I've seen great photos of how dandelions can be integrated into spring gardens. Snows coming tomorrow- big time!...we have to think spring and think about that wonderful dandelion yellow! (oops,Doronicum)!

Don't worry about the typo PokeyPine, I spelled 'Edamame' wrong! Yay! Happy edamame dance! :) I've never cooked edamame myself I've only ever had it at a restaurant. When I saw the soya beans for sale at T&M I got very excited :) The restaurant menu says that the pods are cooked/steamed for 3 minutes - which is why I was concerned when I noticed about having to boil them for 2 hours! So...I plant sucessively otherwise I end up with one massive edamame meal, and have a look around for a soybean rhizobium if possible. A couple more questions if I may... How do others cook the pods straight off the bush? Can they be frozen fresh or cooked to enjoy edamame all year round? Many thanks! Alcina

I think you might be confusing a couple of different issues here. Some people may not like the look of palm trees in Vancouver; that is of course their right. But the issue of them being exotic is different. It's true that our palms are non-native. There are actually only one or two varieties that grow here: the Chinese windmill palm and maybe the odd Mediterranean fan palm. It's just too cold for anything else. But neither of these is invasive in the least. When people object to exotics, it's generally because they become invasive, like Scotch broom or English ivy or Himalayan blackberry or carpet burweed or what have you. These invasive plants start to overrun their environment and cause real ecological problems. As for the pre-1950's, I'm sure these palms could have grown here, if anyone had introduced them. Climate maps are actually showing us getting colder here rather than warmer. Maybe the real problem here is a different kind of plant: sour grapes :)
