UK garden tour, June: help me plan?
Comments (10)Oh Carol, how lovely. But, Cambridsge botanics has a miserably neglected rose garden so I will have a think because there are much nicer fellows gardens in the colleges (and you are always welcome to come and visit my allotment). Nonetheless, Cambridge is a lovely town and worth a visit but gardenwise, I think you can do better than the botanics. Beth Chatto - well this is another garden I am familiar with but you will not be seeing many roses - gorgeous woodland and gravel gardens but roses, nada. However, if you are heading Eastwards, then Peter Beales at Attleborough is standoutand is in the same(ish) area as Bressingham (but again, grasses and perennials but not exactly roses. You absolutely have to take in Mottisfont though. Finally, Wisley, which does have a decent rose display, is absolutely fabulous, for just about the best in horticultural excellence. Are you planning on using public transport. Are you in a group? I will check in the yellow book (this is a list of local gardens open to the public and include some very grand gardens as well as entire villages, when a whole bunch of little private gardens are open on certain days). There are a couple of jewels near Cambridge (Docwras Manor springs to mind, in Shelford. Such a perfect time of year to visit the UK....See MoreBest Gardens in UK/France?
Comments (11)If sight-seeing in Paris doesn't wear you out (or even if it does), it's great to pack a picnic lunch and go to the Bois de Vincennes and visit the Parc Floral, perhaps France's largest botanical garden. (they do sell food in the Parc) If you like dahlias, they have HUGE displays of them in September. (to others: if you're there in mid-late May, there are INCREDIBLE displays of iris, and the Pinède [pinetum] area is full of hostas and astilbes for late May through July) This is what Parisians do on the weekend! Very un-touristy, but very cool. Giverny is a half-day trip IF you take the earliest bus you can (even if you are on your honeymoon, wink wink). If you go later in the day, it can be so crowded it takes twice the time to see. Have a great trip. I'm sure we're all jealous....See MoreGarden Canes in the UK
Comments (5)If you or a friend cannot get out to collect I still think a local garden centre, nursery or diy would be better for you. Have you tried ringing round and asking for delivery? Many of them deliver, and I suspect any extra charge would be cheaper than carriage on an internet order, if you can find a supplier. Brian...See MoreRose Garden at the UK Arboretum (Lexington, KY)
Comments (10)Please Note a correction: Lexington is in Z6 NOT Z7! This is the lovely view when entering from the Fragrant Garden. The plants in front of the split rail are various peonies. Click to enlarge. The roses bounded by this fencing and the stone walls are mainly modern Landscape roses such as Knock-outs and Red and Pink Drifts. On the far side is a Polyantha bed. It had robust if not BSy specimens of Yvonne Rabier and Cecile Brunner. ( I don't know why CB is so widely recommended for my general area as it Bs and defoliates terribly.) The best specimens were an unmarked pink and Mignonette and Marjorie Palmer. After researching, I'm on the lookout for these two. I think this is a pic of the NOID pink Poly or Mignonette. In what I can only guess is the Star Roses "test" bed were many Kordes varieties some of which were clearly mis-marked as I recognized them from my own garden. I suspect they were recently planted since the acquisition by Star Roses of the distribution rights for Kordes from Newflora. They had many I grow or recognized such as Summer Romance, First Crush, Dark Desire and Lavender Veranda, but they were even smaller than my plantings. Very fragrant, but BSy was Orchid Romance which surprised me as a Kentuckian had recently recommended this one. Maybe she sprays. It was a lovely flower in a wonderful hue. It will be interesting to revisit next year. Moving beyond this section are rows of HTs which all looked spent and very frail. I have none to recommend from that section. They are just visible in the RH corner of this pic and in that following....See Moredaituom
