Climbing osteospermum

Last summer I bought a plant labelled "large white osteospermum" from a brilliant pavement garden stall in Gorran Haven in Cornwall. I expected it to be the usual height, about 10" but the stems just got longer and longer until I have had to make a cane tripod and tie them in. It seems to be delighted with this treatment - has anybody else had this experience or is it just the lack of sun and too much rain that has caused this growth habit?
