We have a mix of tomato plants, some bought and some grown by a friend from seed, but the greenhouse has turned into the little shop of horrors. The plants which have developed two shoots from the bottom, could quite possibly be from two seeds but some of the plants developed several side shoots in the same places at the same time, even pinching them out, growth seemed to continue until the leaf base started to become quite lumpy with so many new shoots trying to appear. The biggest problem however has been a mould which is attacking the plants. The fungus develops quick quickly and leaves and stems die and get covered in grey mould and then tomatoes start to rot, usually from the top. Some of the tomatoes have tiny brown spots which appear to be in the skin rather than on it. The friend who grew the toms. from seed has lost all his tomatoes the same way so would think the problem is connected to something going wrong on his part. Most of the tomatoes are pretty large but still very green and no-one I know of in this area have tomatoes showing signs of ripening. Cherry toms seem to be fine, they are ripening slowly and are not as badly affected by the fungus. The feed used is cow manure so could an excess of feed cause the excessive growth of side shoots? How do we deal with the fungus and prevent a re-occurance. It's a lot of problems so we would be grateful for suggestions to remedy any of them.
