Planting new rose

About two years ago I dug up a diseased rose bush and I would like to know if I can now plant a new rose on the same spot. At the moment I have lavender growing in the space, but I really would prefer a rose.

Pam, whatever the desease was that attacked your rose bush I would say that you can replant with a new one. Just be sure that any debriss from the old rose in the form of roots leaves or stems are removed from the soil (I expect there won't be any after the time laps), and incorporate some well decayed organic matter and a general fertilizer at planting time.

I use a lot of organic material such as compost, manure compost, soil conditioner (finely chopped pine chips) mixed into the bed. They will decompose and make nice black soil out of sand. This discourages the nematodes that may be in your sandy soil that will shorten the life of roses. I put 2 cups of alfalfa pellets & 2 cups of milorganite in the bottom of the hole. I mix Rosetone in the bed around the hole, then fertilize the rose later (month or so) with Rosetone scratched into the soil within the dripline. I mulch the rose with manure compost. Water really well when planted and daily at least a gallon for a month at least depending on temps. Lately I've been using Mychorrizae (microorganisms) around the roots at planting. I don't think using the lime would be good unless you have really, really acid soil. Roses like PH at 6.0 - 6.5 which is slightly acid. You might want to check your soil PH. High PH will prevent uptake of some vital nutrients. I have three Don Juans. Very beautiful. Enjoy your roses! Sherry

I've never heard a two year rule before. I know that I am physically incapable of waiting that long:) There's just no way. I think any caution like that should be based on if you had a specific problem with a rose. Was there an issue with the plant that was there previously? And what was that issue? If the rose was just old or did not thrive there for issues of light or something like that you should be able to replant at your convenience. The two year thing seems rather restricting. Something else to think about is 'planting' a rose in a pot. There are a couple of threads addressing that issue on the this forum. Basically pot the rose up in the appropriate sized container and plant the whole thing in the ground. And when you're ready to plant the rose in the earth you can do so. I'm going to bump this up because I seem to have the same issue. But, I have to say right off that during my 7 years at a rose greenhouse, we never once "rotated" our beds to different crops when one variety fell out of favor and was replaced with new bushes. Still, considering my abysmal record with outdoor roses . . . maybe I better give others another shot at this question before Windwhipped is blown astray and I sail along right after her. (Wind gusts here this morning, over 40 mph.) The buds are breaking in my little rose garden by the front gate. Unfortunately, after many years, there doesn't seem to be any buds on the Peace rose nearest the gate. The plant was the largest, grew and bloomed the most vigorously thru season after season. Piling it high with snow over the Winter doesn't seem to have saved it this time. Other bushes are close in the same bed. Am I going to get in trouble by pulling the Peace out and replacing it with another rose? (I've enjoyed watching Rosemay & Thyme, also :o). digitS'

Are you planting in pots or in the ground? If it's in the ground, most of what I add to my clay-loam soil is some additional organic material. I mix in to the native soil about 1/4 or less of cotton burr compost (to lighten the soil a little) and composted manure (for a little nutrition) plus a handful of alfalfa hay (bought at local farm and feed stores, or pet stores for small quantities). I wouldn't worry about a particular topsoil to add if you're in the ground planting. If you mix in known ingredients, you know what you're getting, vs. the possible unknowns of topsoil. The additives don't need to be specific to roses, and unless you have rock-hard clay soils like in the southeast it isn't necessary to add anything if you've already planted them. Some folks do, some don't. If your clay is rock hard, you need to amend the whole bed rather than just around the rose itself, or you'll create a moisture "sink" that retains too much moisture. you cant plant a rose in the same spot as another unless you remove enough soil to leave a 3x3 foot hole. Half fill the new hole with good well rotted manure, place in the rose and back fill with a good top soil mixed with manure.

Specific Replant Disease
Also called "sick soil syndrome," is not an inevitable outcome. When dealing with a single rose I would not be concerned.
Also,it has been two years since a rose was growing there.
I would say that the chance of contracting this malady is slight.

Checking up on the RHS site this article expands on the situation, and the reccommendation is not to plant within the root run of the previouse rose. However, It is a chance I would take when it concerns a single rose after a period of two years. If you want to be absolutely safe, yes, change the soil.
