Long awaited, so now what?

I've been waiting for Connie Willis's new book Blackout for years. It is finally out, and I have it sitting neatly on my TBR pile, but somehow I keep putting off starting it. It's not clear to me exactly why I'm doing this. Perhaps I'm afraid I won't like it, or maybe just that I won't like it ... enough. Or maybe I will love it, but then it will be over. This is really not like me.

Has anyone else done this with a much-anticipated novel by a favorite author?

Oh yes. I have Louise Penny's The Brutal Telling sitting looking at me. I know that as soon as I open the cover I am sunk-and I have work that must be done to deadline.

Hi, off to the airport in 5hrs...at 2.30am!! Checked the buds, they are opening further, a couple of days and they will be fully open I guess, just my luck! Oh well. My house minder is a dummy with a camera....so her hubby says! Hope to see 'something' of them when we get back next Thursday, and maybe the other two clusters later on. Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Gill.

Brian, A larger line doesn't give you more pressure, only more volume. Your faucet coming out of your house is probably a 1/2" line operating at 60 PSI which is pretty common. Plastic pressure regulators aren't needed, IMHO, as you can effectively regulate the pressure with the faucet handle. Just another plastic part to degrade and fail in the hot sun. If you're setting up sprayers, go ahead and crack the sprayer adjustment enough so when you blow through it, some air escapes, then hook everything up and crank the faucet half way open and see how they're covering. The only advantage to high pressure is that the line pressurizes completely sooner than later. As an example, on one run I have eight sprayers, and about two dozen 1-10 gal emitters, and I run full pressure on the faucet, which is coming through a 3/4" galvanized nipple from a 1" PVC water line. The only time you run out of pressure is when you have a lot of large sprayers operating at max output, then they'll drop the pressure downstream quite a bit. Don't forget a vacuum breaker.

Thanks for the additional comments! I love logging in to find new responses for our exciting new room. Superlady, the sign "When I said 'I Do' I didn't mean laundry" is from a lady who made the sign on ebay--she was really nice to work with and has an email that she sends out where you can pick your background paint and any extra details. I have had this problem, too. Isn't it like having a present one is afraid to unwrap, in case it does not live up to the expectation?

I've experienced that many times! A long-desired book is finally in hand, and I just can't start it. I have no idea why. Other books arrive and I dive right into them.

Right now A.S. Byatt's The Children's Book is sitting on my TBR pile in that sort of limbo. I wanted that so badly I bought it in hardcover (something I rarely do). I've had it for months and I just can't seem to start it. Just a reading quirk, I guess.

cc, I picked up the new Louise Penny from the library this morning, but I must make myself wait to start it. I am still reading, reading, reading the new Gabaldon book and have maybe another 200 pages to go.

I do sometimes delay starting a book I am looking forward to reading but only as a much anticipated, very satisfying feeling of pleasure--and only when I have library books on hand that need to be finished and returned.

cc...I also have The Brutal Telling on my TBR shelves. I am saving it because, as long as its there, I know I have a book in my possession I will unquestionably love. So I feel free to work my way through all the other seventy three books on the shelves knowing I don't have to like any of them!
If I reject three books in a row I become convinced I'll never find another good book.Having that sure-thing there helps me sleep at night! LOL

rosefolly-There have been many times a delicious book just sat on my bedside table. I discovered that I have to be "in the mood" to read certain types of books and if I am not than I read something very undemanding. Many of my favorite authors seem to demand full attention!

On a much lighter note, I have M.C. Beaton's latest Hamish Macbeth novel sitting on my bookshelf. It will stay there for another week or so and then be read in one or two sitting. I am enjoying the anticipation. So much fun to have something nice in one's future -

Well Rosefolly, if it turns out to be the last reason, you needn't worry - you can join me in anxiously awaiting the 2nd half, not due out until October (and I want it NOW!).

On the bright side, it IS only October, not a year or two or more (George R.R. Martin / Song of Fire & Ice series anyone???)

Maryc, I'm pretty sure I won't wait until October! I picked it up the other day and read the first few pages. I'm finishing off something else first, but I do believe I'll be deeply immersed pretty soon. Since you are anxiously awaiting Part the Second, I assume you liked it.
