Primroses

I planted some primula vulgaris earlier in the year and they flowered beautifully. They are flowering again, now, with fewer and much smaller flowers. Should I be worried? Might they be stressed?

Thanks for that. They are very pretty so I'll just enjoy the unexpected treat of seeing them twice in one year.

By jelly do you mean flavored gelatin like Jello or do you mean jelly as in strawberry jelly/jam. I found this cached from www.redmondfamily.com & I think they're talking about a package of strawberry Jello in this recipe: Strawberry Fluff 1 strawberry jelly 1 cup evaporated milk Make 1 strawberry jelly using only half the usual amount of water. Allow to cool and nearly set. Whip 1 cup icy cold unsweetened evaporated milk until thick. When jelly is just setting combine whipped milk with jelly, and whip until thick. Pour into serving dish and leave to set in fridge. Serve with fruit.

Probably not typical, but it won’t bother the plant. It may start blooming next warm spell. I would not cover it with anything since the heat trapped by a jar in sunlight vs at night would be a large temperature swing and that might cause damage. Since you are near one of the Great Lakes, that will mitigate temperature extremes unless the Lakes freeze which seems unlikely given the warmth of this winter thus far. Primroses do fine here on the border of z4 and 5, so yours shouldn’t have issues.

Would that be due to early seeds getting an head start as it can with wallflowers sometimes?

Come to think of it there are a few flowers/weeds that have a double season. Dandelion for one.

A climatic trigger is more likely.

Where I garden in Tasmania the nights are generally quite cool & flowering 'out of season' frequently happens - some things will flower sporadically right through the year. Even lilies will rebloom if they experience a hot dry spell followed by a sudden drop in temperature and a drenching rain.

Some of the modern varieties don't seem to know when to stop. I can usually find one little faithful yellow one plugging away under the February sun - and it's smiling up at the big black clouds of early spring right now.
