Horse chestnut

I have an old horse chestnut tree in my garden. Some similar trees in the area had to be cut down recently because they suffered from something like a virus, I think. Mine has a lot of brown spots and pale blotches on the leaves this year, otherwise it looks fine, just seems to drop a few dry leaves. Could it have this disease, or could it just be symptoms of the local drought here in London. Can anyone enlighten me please? Thanks.

There is a fairly recent disease called bleeding disease which kills Horse Chestnuts very quickly. The symptoms are not the leaf splotches that you are seeing, but rather cankers on the trunk which exude sap that runs down and discolours the trunk. Various minor leaf diseases must be considered normal for Horse Chestnuts. The link should be helpful to you.

Could you have a problem with horse chestnut leaf miner, I wonder? It's relatively new to these shores but has started to cause more problems of late - I remember reading about it in the paper last year and noticing more damage on horse chestnut leaves in my own area.

I used to have a row of pretty large common horse chestnuts (until they died of a disease that has affected most of the horse chestnuts in western Europe). They were not very old, but they grew at an incredible rate. In the early days as a collector, I used them to get some shade for hostas in containers. The chestnuts were extremely greedy feeders. Their roots grew into the pots and extracted every last bit of nutrients in it. The soil in which the trees grew was basically sand, with a top layer of 30 in. black garden soil. On a regular base I added a Ã¯Â¿Â½ in. layer of compost as a mulch. Well, the trees managed to turn the whole bunch into plain sand again: almost all of the "black" was eaten out of the soil. "Is this tree going to survive.... with only a couple of leaves? Sure will. Anything that's green will photosynthesize. Is it a set back? Sure is, the tree will now have to use energy from the roots to produce more leaves, to meet it's needs. Is it a big deal? No, not on such a small tree, by end of summer, you won't hardly know anything happened. BUT, you don't want it to happen repeatedly. Things can go down hill fast then, if it does.

Brown blotches on the leaves sounds like Ohridella, though it could also be the minor fungal disease Guignardia aesculi, which has fairly similar symptoms.
