Has anyone been on this crappy exotics forum called UK Oasis? To me them lot are like the gestapo of the internet!

Any move and youre banned, bullsh*t!

The main culprit seems to be one Paul Spracklin (aka Paul Spankme).

Anyone been on this HOUSE OF CLIQUES?

I had a quick glance in response to your post.

It looked like a fascinating forum for those interested in growing tropicals, and appears to be known and loved for its wit, expertise & intelligent approach.

Their issue seems to be maintaining civilised and good quality discussion expressed in clear and correct written English. How can any one have a quarrel with that? Isn't that what everyone wants to find in any internet forum?

Seems to me you've come onto this forum to try to stir things and to look for a clique of your own to do it with. I doubt, somehow, that you'll find any takers here.

"How fast do they grow from seed" Expect it to fill a 4"-6" pot in the first season. "Must you grow it in the ground?" Of course, not. "Must you grow it in the ground? You could always bury a big platic tub and remove it late in the year..." You can do that with any tropical plant that doesn't require high humidity. "Maybe i'll try keeping on outside here in WI next winter and see what happens?" That is what the rest of us are talking about. Do you know around the snowbelts of the greatlakes, the ground under the snow doesn't even freeze because the snow insulates so well? Around here we get below 0F with no snowcover!" I am sure that a Butia capitata at 28' is a wonderful site, but I really like the fact that this palm does not get that large, that fast here. If it does survive long term without protection, I hope it's size does not become unreasonable. I really like being close to the fronds. I guess walking under it would be nice, but any taller would be too much for what I prefer. To me the foliage is much prettier than the trunk with this species of palm. I think one of the reasons (besides cold) we have no large Butias is that they were almost impossible to get in the 1980's or anytime before, without an extraordinary effort. Not to mention there was no internet to make finding these palms easier. I was in the Southeast right after the 1985 freeze. It killed native Palmetto's, as well as Butia's. The strange thing was there would be one perfect plant right next to a burned plant, right next to a dead one, even though the vast majority survived. After I returned home I noticed Trachycarpus palms in this area that, for some reason, I had never noticed before. I then went on to try and find a Pindo Palm, as everyone in the South called them back then. I have relatives all over, and they were unable to find any. I was told after the horrible freezes of the 1980's (there was a colder one in 1962) the Gulf Coast kind of gave up on many palms. Now, just like here it has been fairly mild there, and now they are back to planting many palm species. Just like we should be doing. If some plant you love is living for well over 10 years without protection, or attention, then isn't it worth growing? People lose plants due to many factors other than cold, and there is never certainty that any plant will survive long term. If we get a terrible freeze, and all my plants die, do you think I should just give up? Of course not. There is always the option of protecting valuable plants from freezing weather as well. They have to do it with commercial Citrus groves all the time. -Brian

Hello there Philip, nice to 'see' you here! Must admit I have never thought of any of the banana family as being hardy enough to try here, I had always associated them with far more tropical conditions. I did have two large pots full of a very rampant bamboo, hence the tubs, till last summer when they unfortunately dried out far too much/for too long and I lost them both completely. Despite my efforts to revive them they had given up. My mum still has hers so I think I may well be asking for a division come spring. I am going to get some Cannas also as they are lush and tropical to put with my Elephant Ears which had leaves like dustbin lids this summer. Our 1/2 acre garden is so open and exposed it is difficult to know what to do with it at times as most of it is lawned. Loads of gardening progs on TV give all sorts of ideas/projects but mainly for smaller enclosed town gardens, our is the complete opposite, the area taken up by the driveway and patio are bigger than most folks gardens!...but I love it here and wouldn't change it for the world. g'day phil, you can post more than one reply to a thread and yes you can also post more thna one thread on the subject matter, it takes a play with words eg.,. to post a second reply in the same day insert the words in front of the subject line topic. the same if posting another similar post, but on the second day you can answer a post again as normal. so with some manipulation of their robot the forum is as friendly as you want it to be. under past managements they would pull o/t's like this as the past manager had a ready supply of "no life" who pretty much read/scanned every post on every day and took great pleasure and satisfaction in seeing someone sent to and then have to "grovel" to be allowed back or to simply see another persons posts pulled without any notification, now they where the unfriendly days. len

It looks quite interesting if you're into exotics - I'm not, in the main, but have the occasional question relating to them. I prefer to read forums where people are polite, don't write posts in txt-speak and with a lack of spammers. Usually, boards like that are moderated. It doesn't mean they get it right all of the time, but generally if you don't like the rules, there is always the option of going elsewhere or starting your own.

Well, I've joined the site and the info. is prodigious. Not into Exotics, mainly. I grow a couple (Brugs and I'm tryingCestrums) but the site seems O.K. If you don't like Mods., go on Boxing Rebels. THey'll give you a run for your money!!!

I have been a uko member for quite a while and I have to say it is not a repressive place everyone is welcomed there have been some recent issues with a few people who did not respect the board rules. I would say it is the best source of knowledge for tropical growing in the uk possibly in europe and some of the friendliest people i have ever met just because one or two people have abused the welcome they received it is no reason to try and dissuade anyone else from joining this fantastic forum.. as for Paul he's a great chap full of advice. I would say to anyone interested in tropicals have a look you'll get hooked.

That reminds me: I tried to join UK Oasis a few months ago. I filled out the on-line registration form, was sent a welcoming email, but then couldn't ever log in. It was really annoying, because I could see my information, part of which I'd filled in incorrectly, but was unable to change it. I emailed them but got no response.

I've thoroughly enjoyed what I've read of it so far.

I registered about a week ago and the system obviously worked then. You could try again, maybe witha different user-name, Ornata?

Hi, g_n. The first question I asked (about C. Nocturnum) was answred by the statement that I shouldn't bother!! But the info. I got after that was useful. As you imply, handy for info. but keep away from the intricate details!
