have just bought a 5ft coconut plant will it grow in my sheltered garden?

No. Temperatures below 10Â°C will kill it. You'll need a (very!) large heated greenhouse.

It could grow in a warm, sunny spot in your house, but only if you mist it or keep the humidity high.

I do not always have access to pumice so I mix it up with whatever grit I have hanging around. Expanded shale. , washed 1/4 Decomposed granite , course red lava sand, perlite. I am not anal retentive. I am more of the "what's in the frig" kind of gardener. I do not know if you are in Florida, California or Texas. The quantities will be important to your location and how humid you are. I know Floridians who grow in 100% grit, and inland Californians who use more humous in the mix. Its a mixed bag here in Texas as U sit under the remnant of Hurricane Harvey who might be leaving 20" on me. I have also gone all summer often without summer moisture. Not this year.

Hi, I live on the sunny side of Maui, and we have coconuts in the garden. I can't help you with indoor growing, but can tell you our winter temps are in the low 80's during the day and into the mid 60's during the night. Our humidity is usually in the 80% range. However there are many climate variations on the island and coconuts seem to grow everywhere except at the highest elevations. Good luck with your plant - have you got high ceilings? I hope so! I have just planted a dwarf samoan coconut in the garden which is supposed to keep low enough to be able to pick the nuts easily. We have to hire climbers to harvest and trim our other trees. Cocos require much warmer temps than you will find in the British Isles. As soon as the soil drops below 60Âº (15ÂºC), the plant will quickly decline. It likes full sun, warm feet and humidity; I suspect the UK can only provide the 3rd. Try the IPS BB. Hi This is an interesting thread to me as I have been trying to dwarf palms for several years. I have been told repeatedly that a palm can not be dwarfed as it will either not reach maturity or die. Obviously you're doing it as they're producing nuts therefoore mature and obviously way under normal size. I've tried Areca,Wodyetia and Roystonea all are still under 8 feet and growth has slowed considerably but show no signs of maturing. Have had none abort though at least so far. have not tried Coconut as I don't have enough room and have not been running long enough to ee if it will work gary

No. There are only two places in the U.S. where they will grow, and they are southern Florida and southern California along one particular area. They are not numerous in either place; so they would not be suitable at all in a British climate.

Even though I live in zone 10a, coconuts wouldn't last long because summers are short and we have wet winters. We can grow alocasioa, howea, strelitzia and other subtropical plants without protection though.
