Grass-killing advice

I wouldn't normally dream of using any type of weed-killer but sadly I think it may be necessary to control grass regrowth in the school garden. I have planted into a membrane under gravel and I am concerned to stop grass regrowth through the holes that have been cut. What product would you recommend and would I be able to paint it on so that the plant itself is not killed?

Any advice welcome!

How about hand-weeding? Schools have lots of hands.

Could do, but grass is hard for tiny hands to pull out. I thought one dose of weedkiller at the start of the holidays so it's inactive by the time term starts again would save a lot of back-breaking work.

So, is there anything that kills grass?

The Bermuda was covered for 8 weeks. We have not yet removed the plastic because I'm not yet sure if we should add topsoil or remove all of the dead bermuda first. I looked under the plastic, and all of the bermuda and weeds are white and dead.

I had Bermuda patches all over my Blue Grass yard. I tried several different chemicals, some from box stores and some commercial grade. They did nothing but "control" it. None of them of them killed it except for Roundup but then it kills everything else AND the Bermuda still came back in most of the areas. I had always heard that you will end up digging it up so after about 5 years of a lot of time and money trying to get rid of it I finally set aside a weekend and dug it all out. You don't have to go very deep, just a couple inches. The next weekend I picked up 300 sq ft of Blue Grass sod ($120.00) and patched everything up. It's been a couple years since then and everything looks great.

Hi all.. I'm from Northern New Jersey. I have a medium sized yard and have been trying to get it in shape since we bought the house last year. I started w/ Scotts Step One crabgrass preventer, and a few weeks ago put down the Step Two. I have this weed or not sure what it is and it seems to be spreading. Any thoughts on best way to kill/remove/stop the spreading? See attached photos. Thanks for any advice!

Thanks for the bump and thanks for the advice. I hadn't checked the forum for a while since I wasn't getting any discussion initially. Ok, so I did some reading on Pylex. Didn't find a lot of real world info, but did find a few reviews from some pros on another forum. I also came across some discussions of using triclopyr with Acclaim or Tenacity. I had great success with Tenacity at removing nimblewill, but I believe bermuda is only labeled as "sensitive" to Tenacity. I don't know much about Acclaim. Pylex looks to be around $500 for a few ounces...wow:) But if that's what I got to do I will. I would like to get this in check before the patch continues to grow. I see a usage rate of 1.5oz per acre. For a 20'x50' patch I'm probably looking at a drop or two, lol.

I've heard that industrial-strentgh vinegar makes an effective herbicide.

The obvious one is any weed killer that contains glycophosphate (sometimes glyphosphate). It kills the grass that grows round the edge of my house. Stone dead and it doen't reappear till next year. I think Roundup contains this chemical.

Thanks, nomis5, good to have the name of a product I can use. The garden has been made by piling topsoil on top of existing turf so I think there will be a fair bit of grass reappearing. It'll have to be dealt with somehow or other.

Roundup does work, I've used it more than once and it did not come back till far later in the year.
