Ponds in the UK

I wish the ice would kill my azolla!

I keep looking at the ice on my pond and wishing it would kill off the azolla. I should have netted it out before, but it always seemed too cold or miserable. Next sunny day I shall make myself do it!

By the way, is everyone frozen solid into their ponds?

I've found a new site for picking up and getting rid of odd bits and pieces. (Look in my details for it)

It was -3 here in suffolk last night but no ice on my pond. It did ice up a bit round the water outlets where cold air could get to it more last week.

I just use Borax sprinkled under sink and on floor of linen closet in bathrooms (where there is access door to bathroom water pipes)... plus under bookshelves which hold potted plants and around back of washer where pipes enter house...in other words near any water source or dampness. Years ago I tried monthly pesticide service but odor of spray was worse aggravation to me than insects...when I complained they offered odorless spray which was okay but I still worried about potent pesticides. Plus I still had occasional insect visitor. If it was cold and wet they said bugs trying to get warm/dry. If hot and dry, the explanation was they came in looking for water. LOL Always willing to make extra trip but it just meant more pesticide all over my baseboards. So I cancelled service and we started using Borax recommended by County Extension Service. Works well...I still occasionally see a half-dead slow moving roach but I can deal with that. If you have pets be sure Borax used in inaccessible places only. Doesn't work on spiders and I sometimes have those tiniest of black ants on windowsill in kitchen but they are easily dealt with by rubbing alcohol/water solution in spray bottle...josh

Oh my goodness, did I kill my Sambucus Black Lace?

Don't give up! I can tell you our 4 Sambucus shrubs really took off this year after being planted 3 years ago. They are finally stunning and thriving! We were really considering giving up on them if they looked as ratty at the end of this season as they did for the last couple. I'm really stunned and wish I had a before/after pic because it really is something. By the way... No fertilizer - no nothing other than it's "natural" environment and some minimal pruning/shaping.

HELP! Why am I killing my Begonias???
Q

Now comes some tidbits from a Floridian! First, Rexes do not thrive in FL. They are grown in temp controlled greenhouses with swamp coolers, which is why you see them for sale. Although it may feel muggy if you are in one, the temp is lowered during the day and cooled at night - relatively. There are newer rex/rhizo hybrids I am growing with success, but pure rexes never make it in our hot, wet summers. It is truly the hot nights that kill them. 80F lows are not uncommon. In habitat, rexes see 68-70F at night. Secondly, whomever started this thread is growing in soil that is way too heavy. I use Fafard #2 with additional perlite and pine bark added. I also keep my begonias barely potted up - like a few inches larger when they need it. That ensures the soil does not stay wet, which kills begonias. If you struggle to pick up a bag of soil, it is too heavy. I have five foot canes in 3 gallon pots. I can easily pick up a 3 gallon cane with one hand - that is what they prefer. Keeping that in mind should help you grow great begonias! Picture is my bench of 'River Nile'! Greg Sytch, ABS Horticultural Corresondent

Wishing that a house would land on my boyfriend's ex-wife (long)

Your BF never should have gotten into a relationship until he had worked out the issues he had with his ex-wife. It's not fair to you, him, or his daughter who is emotionally invested in you now. I suggest looking into getting him some kind of counseling. Meanwhile, while it is real easy to place all the blame on the ex-wife, just remember there are two sides to every story. I mean, many many people are emotionally and physically abused and yet they are able to start new relationships and are able to utter the words "I love you" with no problem. So it just seems a little too convenient to blame the ex-wife for all the hurtful things your BF says and does. This post was edited by Amber3902 on Fri, Feb 15, 13 at 18:27

Just the edge of the pond has been icing up. The sycamore leaves are falling in though so I need to keep an eye on that so not enough go to the bottom in case it really does freeze over. It has been quite cold here as well and the fish are down at the bottom of the deep end.The frost did kill off my primrose willow but the watercress seems to have survived it.

No ice here, either, and my waterlilies still have leaves on!

I once asked someone how you can get rid of Duckweed and they reckoned the only way was to flood the pond. Is it possible to do this with yours to get rid of the Azolla?

Easiest way is to wait until the pond ices over and then lift out any ice which has Azolla frozen in it. Job done! (well part done...some of it always escapes)
Remember keep Azolla well away from drains as its very invasive and because of our milder Winters is becoming a real problem in rivers and streams. The best thing to do is compost it.
When I first had Azolla (many years ago)our Winters were much colder and it didn't overwinter at all. I actually used to buy it every year!
Think it's illegal to sell it now.
