Can anyone - 'Name that daffodil?!'

Hi all

Are there any experts out there who could possibly identify this daffodil? It's growing in open fields by our cottage in south-west Ireland, pretty much naturalised and doing it's own thing.

It's a beautiful daff, I'd love to know what it is. Before we moved 4 years ago the cottage had no occupants for 25 years, and the old lady who lived there until then had a son who worked in a nursery (or something), so perhaps he got the bulbs originally.

Claire that is such a pretty daffodil. I would love some of them in my garden. I have no idea what it is called but I just wanted to say how beautiful it is, and to think that you just have them all around you in fields. How wonderful. I just have a few daffodils in my garden and did plant some dwarf ones to come up in my front garden. They looked so pretty when they all came up.

How lovely to hear from you, yes it's a gorgeous daffodil isn't it? And what a shame about the timing - I had a whole bucket full of bulbs to give away last september - I would gladly have posted some to you in Leeds! I sent some to my Mum in Devon and also gave loads away to workmates in west Cork. Because of re-locating to the US for now it meant that I couldn't do all the planting etc. that I wanted to, so the next best thing was to give them to my friends instead. I still have several clumps in my garden (the part that used to be field!) so maybe I can get some over to you some time!

I went and had a look at your website. WOW!!! What an excellent web site and what an amazing pond project! That is major engineering/construction, I am so impressed! I shall be bookmarking your site and going back to it another time for a longer browse. I am very interested in your pond and how it's turned out. As you can see from my link, I too was going to do a pond, it was to be my Autumn 04 project but that was not to be! I got a bit further than the outline, the hole was started, but it's just full of weeds now. But next year, yes!

Well, never mind if you didn't know the daffodil name, perhaps someone else will!

Daffodils Already blooming! well wouldn't that be a treat at the end of Febuary! I was surprised enough to see that I had some coming up, They are always early on the south side of our house, Daffodils in my main sun garden wont be sprouting until around Mid to late March. Actually last Spring I addidently left a pot of daffodils half burried in the ground! I was meaning to plant them later but I forgot, and even those are coming up! I sure hope them being partly exposed to the cold didn't harm the bulbs any! the ground is mostly unthawed next to the foundation of our house on the south side so I was able to get to pot off them and put them in the ground with very little root damage! Here is a pic of what the pot of daffodils looked like the other day after being in the ground for nearly a year! What do you guys think, do I have a good chance that these will survive? the sprouts seem healthy, and the bulbs don't seem squishy or have a bad smell, like what happends to most of my daffs! Is the reason for digging to keep them blooming? This Sat I will be with a bunch of folks who grow daffs to show and will try to remember to ask about the 3 year digging rotation schedule that so many try to follow. If I remember correctly, it had to do with them needing to be lifted/dug so the surrounding soil in the holes could be amended. Over time, the blooms, of some cultivars anyway, will decrease in size if they do not have proper nutrients. I'm not sure, but lack of good nutrients 'could' also affect the bloom color. Don't hold me to that though as I will try to verify that. Usually too, when daffs are planted for growing and showing, I 'think' no more than 3 bulbs are planted, spaced out in a hole. That allows the bulbs to multiply without becoming crowded, thus smaller bulbs, and smaller blooms, or no blooms at all if they are entirely too crowded. Some daffs are a lot more prolific than others and seem to multiply a 'lot' more than others. In my opinion, Ice Follies is a great prolific daff. On the other hand, 'Mount Hood' still has the original patch I planted with fewer and fewer blooms. I wonder if they are crowded or if they are lacking nutrients. Some cultivars are just by nature bigger bulbs, so it could possibly be that they are crowded, regardless of how many were planted in each hole and how they were spaced. Do you plan to dig them next year? I'm not suggesting that diggings one's daffs every 3 years is for everyone, because I don't see it as necessary at all, unless one is considering entering them in competition. As far as the FAQ go, I feel they are to be geared toward the casual gardener, growing daffs, or whatever for their own enjoyment in their gardens. Sue

It was surprising; some of the bulbs are so small. I don't know whether these cultivars just have small bulbs, or not. But all the small bulbs were very inexpensive, so might need to grow on a bit, before they do much. Knowing the source of the bulbs, makes it understandable why a lot of them are quite small and cheap. They are donated bulbs from various sources and chances are good that a lot of them have maybe needed dug years ago, before the bulbs grew crowded and divided themselves, multiplying but just making smaller bulbs. I see I have some very small Conquest here that came to me via the IN Daff Society and I'm to grow them out (plant, let them get big, and then later dig them for our bulb sale). I'm sure they are the same source as your Conquest are. These are the smallest of the small. My thinking is that very small or tiny bulbs are often scoffed at by buyers and just won't sell very well. Actually there can be some very good finds at Daff Soc sales, but I'm probably preaching to the choir telling you so. all the small bulbs were very inexpensive, so might need to grow on a bit, before they do much. Yes, I'm not big on 'instant gratification' either, and don't mind waiting an extra year for a real show of something unique or 'special'. Back in 2008 I bought Chaste for $3 at a daff sale. I dug it this year and had so many nice sized bulbs and shared some with some daff loving friends and still have 7 nice bulbs to reset for myself. To some it might just look like a plain old white large trumpet, but it is a wonderful show flower, with nearly every bloom 'perfect', and retails for $15 for one bulb from a specialty grower.

Off hand I can't tell you the cultivar name but you can start narrowing the field down if you know if your Daffodil is classed as a trumpet or a large cup. A trumpet's corona (cup) is as long or longer than the perianth segments. A large/long cup's corona is more than 1/3 but less than equal to the length of the perianth (outer petals) segments. If you gently bend the perianth forwards over the cup you can usually tell which it is. From your description it might be one of the reverse bi-colors. There are so many new cultivars, if you know it's classification it might narrow down the field a bit, if you can either get a look at some bulb catalogs that specialize in Daffodil/Narcissus or... growers online you might get lucky... with a bit more information someone here might be able to pinpoint it for you.
