Looks like this rose is still in its nursery pot. Assuming you bought it recently for the spray residue to still be on the leaves from the nursery, can you simply return it? Looks like an unhealthy specimen. Deep canker on the middle right of your first photo, whatever else is going on there. In the second to last photo, may be another long canker on the left side of the cane, as the cane also looks distorted there. The last photo shows the same cane from another angle? All the woody streaking looks like mechanical injury to the cane that the rose has tried to heal over. Wouldn't expect a rose this young to be barking-up (that's what I've always called it, whatever the technical term may be) beyond the shank of the root stock. These look to have been present when you acquired the rose. Unfamiliar with scale (thankfully) on a first-hand basis, but they have enemies such as ladybugs & parasitic wasps. From this site http://tinyurl.com/2auxrn: "Scale insects include the armored scales, Aulacapsis rosae, rose scale, and Quadraspidiotus perniciosus, San Jose scale...San Jose scale may spread by wind...Scales are attacked by many natural enemies...Look for exit holes in mature scale covers, which indicate parasitization." This is a pest I'd be concerned might spread in the garden. You could contact a local Consulting Rosarian for help determining if this is the case. You say this wasn't apparent when you bought the rose, but showed up since then? The mottled leaves wouldn't concern me. Rose mosaic virus used to be considered only spread by grafting virus-infected scion or stock. Henry would know updated information on that. Unless you see telltale signs of RMV on leaves when considering a rose, in which case would be a good idea not to select it, it may have it & only display symptoms when under stress. Considering the cankers & possibly scales, no wonder this poor rose is having a hard time!

Towandaaz: Looks like you have about the same amount of growth as I have. You've got some nice basals coming in. Our last frost date is May 8...aaaannddd...we are supposed to get snow this weekend! That's going to wreck havoc in the garden. Everything started leafing out in February. All the fruit trees bloomed a month ago. The garden looked like this yesterday, but I'm afraid what will happen this weekend. I guess I'm just going to have to wait and see like rabainsz7bpnw says. Let me know how your Geoff Hamilton does. I've appreciated the photos of this rose for a long time, but heard that it is a stingy bloomer. Altorama: The soil seemed to be pretty moist when I checked it. The drip lines are running fine. The roses under the maple seemed to be doing the best.

Thank you so much, Jackie, for such a detailed analysis! I did look at pictures on HMF, even printed some off for my rose notebook, but am still struggling with the differences in all the names. But I have never seen any pink on her at all, so now I can take one rose off my list! I need to shorten it somehow, as I’m running out of land. Last night, I dreamt that I bought the neighbors house, and turned it into a rose park! I’ve really got roses on the brain. :-)
