Frogs croaking!

I woke up on Saturday night and was amazed to hear my frogs croaking loud enough for me to hear them from inside the house!

Are they confused?

Maybe they're rebelling against the lousy weather we've had all year, so they're starting from scratch at spring again. Frogspawn next?!

I think it's because we haven't really had a summer. They still think it is cool enough to be spring... We had such a bad frogspawning that we could do with an extra batch. Goodness knows if any of it survived as for the first time in our 10 years ponding we seemed to have very faulty spawn and I would be very surprized to see it materialize into lovely froglets, juveniles and full adults. I think the norm is only about 5 in every 2000 spawn will make it to adulthood but this year I would be ecstatic if any of it matured.

I agree with chas, Hertford. You didn't say how the Army Corps of Engineers came to be involved in telling you what you can and can't do with this wet place on your property in the first place (did you contact them, or did they contact you, for instance?). But generally, any place officially designated by the government as a "wetland" is subject to a number of different protections that even someone like me (who belongs to half a dozen conservation societies) doesn't really know all the ins and outs of. A wetland also usually does NOT mean "pond." "Wetlands" are generally defined as areas that are covered in water part or most of the year, but at least parts of them are dry part of the time (I think). Bogs, marshes and swamps all fall into the designation of "wetland." It's possible the ACE WILL let you do enough with that property to clean it up and pretty it up and make it into more of a pond. Then again, you may have to settle for just cleaning it up some, and allowing for what wildlife naturally occurs there (although ACE or not, I'd NOT be willing to allow venomous snakes to remain that close to my house). Where you live, that could include copperheads, rattlesnakes and water moccasins, I think, plus possibly coral snakes, the most venomous snake in North America (venom similar to the cobra). You probably need to do a lot of research, but as far as cutting down the trees and shrubs, and any other "weeds" you want to get out of there, I'd say NOW is the time to do it, since during the winter any snakes that live there WILL be in hibernation and not likely to send you to the hospital. Ox, It always feels like spring has arrived in Feb. here in southern OK, and probably in most of the rest of the region too but winter drops back in once every 7-10 days until the end of April most years, just to keep us guessing! Just watch.....and you'll see. : ) Helen and Ada, I speak to all the wild things, and sometimes they speak to me. For example, if I am slow to put out the deer corn in late afternoon on winter days, the does make the fawns stay in the woods while the does stand in the pasture and "scream" for me to hurry up and get the corn put out for them. They have me trained really, really well. Carol, I noticed that on the Mesonet as well, and I have been trying hard not to gloat. We haven't had the "most rain" on any given day here in Marietta in probably a couple of years. And, that mere half-inch of moisture dropped our Keetch-Byram Drought Index from 674 to 640 in one day. That's a huge drop, considering the KDBI usually only goes up 1 or 2 points a day. It was getting so close to 700, which is extremely high, so I feel better now that it is back in the mid-600s. Dorothy, The buds are swelling on my fruit trees. Have you seen anything similar? I am starting to hope for a couple of cold nights to slow them down, because it seems like they are trying to bloom too early, and that, I suppose, is yet another sign of spring. Dawn

Dawn, boy are you right about the weed growth! I've been pulling weeds from one of the beds for a week now, and they keep coming up. We all know it's a never ending job, right? Henbit, Speedwell (blue flowers), Spring Beauties, Dandelions, and another white flowering weed have been blooming for a few days now. The early Daffs, as you said, are gone, and the mid-season Daffs are blooming like crazy. They had a nice cold winter to spur their growth this spring. The Redbuds are just bursting to flower now, and the pears are done. The Malva zebrinas are growing now, as well as the Rue. The Centaurea Montana Blue and Silene - pink flowering) are putting out new growth, and spreading at that. I see green leaves emerging on the Lavender Munstead, Rosemary, and Fennel. The fall Asters are popping up everywhere - I'll have to do some judicious pulling there. The Monarda is up about 1".. I see no signs yet of the Butterfly Bush and pray that it made it thru it's first winter. The Phlox x 'Wanda' is greening up and should put on a nice show the middle to latter of April. I have lettuce sprouting, but no sign of the snap peas. I may not get much of that if it turns hot too quickly - assuming they even come up. I did plant quite a lot of it to climb up the fence in the backyard - we'll see. Don't have any violets blooming yet. Birds are singing like crazy, woodpeckers are rat-a-tat-tatting on the trees, and bird love is in the air. I hope everyone has a lovely spring! Susan

Hi Kazzie. No things are not good. Have a look on 'Good pond turned bad' thread on here as I have tried to explain to Big Kid what has happened. Hopefully all will be well again in a very short time. I was worried because I couldn't let anyone know as we didn't know what was going to happen until after it happened leaving us with no website forum or emails. Heartbreaking really. Anyway we are still positive and hope to be back to normal as soon as poss.

I just wish we had frogs in the pond!!!!

Would love to hear them croaking, but old sid the snake seems to have frightened them off. I prefer by the way, to think they are frightened off, so please do not imply anything....more permanent!

So may have an active pond during spawning season when sid is sleeping?

I really hope your frogs haven't croaked in the other sense!

I wonder how you chase snakes away? Can't remember if I told you or not, but I only ever once had a snake in my front garden (not where my pond is) and that had obviously escaped or been released by some prat who didn't want to look after it any longer. When I phoned the police, they hadn't had a report of a lost snake and they wouldn't come out to deal with it. The RSPCA also wouldn't come out unless it was poisonous! How I was supposed to know that information is another story. The local ranger eventually came three days later, after the snake had appeared curled up on the wall under greenery every day, but it disappeared before he arrived and I still don't know what happened to it. Apparently we don't have grass snakes in Ealing, so who knows what it was.....
