Frogs croaking!

I woke up on Saturday night and was amazed to hear my frogs croaking loud enough for me to hear them from inside the house!

Are they confused?

Maybe they're rebelling against the lousy weather we've had all year, so they're starting from scratch at spring again. Frogspawn next?!

I think it's because we haven't really had a summer. They still think it is cool enough to be spring... We had such a bad frogspawning that we could do with an extra batch. Goodness knows if any of it survived as for the first time in our 10 years ponding we seemed to have very faulty spawn and I would be very surprized to see it materialize into lovely froglets, juveniles and full adults. I think the norm is only about 5 in every 2000 spawn will make it to adulthood but this year I would be ecstatic if any of it matured.

I agree with chas, Hertford. You didn't say how the Army Corps of Engineers came to be involved in telling you what you can and can't do with this wet place on your property in the first place (did you contact them, or did they contact you, for instance?). But generally, any place officially designated by the government as a "wetland" is subject to a number of different protections that even someone like me (who belongs to half a dozen conservation societies) doesn't really know all the ins and outs of. A wetland also usually does NOT mean "pond." "Wetlands" are generally defined as areas that are covered in water part or most of the year, but at least parts of them are dry part of the time (I think). Bogs, marshes and swamps all fall into the designation of "wetland." It's possible the ACE WILL let you do enough with that property to clean it up and pretty it up and make it into more of a pond. Then again, you may have to settle for just cleaning it up some, and allowing for what wildlife naturally occurs there (although ACE or not, I'd NOT be willing to allow venomous snakes to remain that close to my house). Where you live, that could include copperheads, rattlesnakes and water moccasins, I think, plus possibly coral snakes, the most venomous snake in North America (venom similar to the cobra). You probably need to do a lot of research, but as far as cutting down the trees and shrubs, and any other "weeds" you want to get out of there, I'd say NOW is the time to do it, since during the winter any snakes that live there WILL be in hibernation and not likely to send you to the hospital. Then, come spring, they'll be easier to see and deal with. Best of luck, Jeff

Ralf, I'm not an expert, so any comments are just my thoughts, doesn't make them true. :-) That said, here's my thoughts on your post: A number of ponders use plants for filtration and to keep pond clean. I have one with a pump and filter and one with plants only. I can't tell you about property value or the noise from the frogs bothering neighbors. I guess checking with town authorities and/or real estate agents would answer that. Many regulations require a fence around any water of a certain depth. As far as swimming in it, yes, it would be comfortable as far as temperatures, but whether it would be safe or not is a question that comes up from time to time on the forum. See the PLOND post for links and other comments about swimming in a natural pond. Some people do and say they have no ill effects, other people don't and are concerned about the ill effects. I, personally, would not want to swim in a man-made natural pond. You are right,it is not a good idea to allow run-off in a pond. You sure don't want a pea-soup pond to swim in!! That's one of the results of fertilizer getting into the pond. Pesticides, bacteria and parasites are other possibilities. Good luck. Anne

Thanks guys! Kristy, that's a good idea. I had tried to use my kids' laptops to get on, but the ports are missing. 3 laptops, and not one of them could get on either. ugh. Gonna have to get somekinda back-up..my comp has crashed on me several times already today. Completely shuts down and restarts on it's own. Lotsa error reports. I wonder if the main problem is Windows XP? Gonna have to maybe uninstall and re-install it. But I don't have the WinXP software to manually download it, and I am scared that if I uninstall it I won't be able to get online to reinstall it. Maybe the comp guy can do it for me. I'll have to give him a call..I just feel bad about bothering him cuz he spent so much time on my comp already, and did alot more than he had to, and he didn't charge us since he's my son's friend's dad. I don't want him to feel like I am taking advantage. what to do, what to do.

That was wonderful....Isn't it a shame we don't have TV shows like that any more??? The younger people are really missing out on a lot.... Although, I've seen Carol Burnet and Tim Conway over and over, have some of the tapes, I still laugh out loud at their antics...... Good old TV, nothing better.......

When I saw a Frog heading appear, I was hoping you'd turn up Alison. I haven't been able to get into your site for a few days now... is all ok?

Hi Kazzie. No things are not good. Have a look on 'Good pond turned bad' thread on here as I have tried to explain to Big Kid what has happened. Hopefully all will be well again in a very short time. I was worried because I couldn't let anyone know as we didn't know what was going to happen until after it happened leaving us with no website forum or emails. Heartbreaking really. Anyway we are still positive and hope to be back to normal as soon as poss.

I just wish we had frogs in the pond!!!!

Would love to hear them croaking, but old sid the snake seems to have frightened them off. I prefer by the way, to think they are frightened off, so please do not imply anything....more permanent!

So may have an active pond during spawning season when sid is sleeping?

Chip,

I really hope your frogs haven't croaked in the other sense!

I wonder how you chase snakes away? Can't remember if I told you or not, but I only ever once had a snake in my front garden (not where my pond is) and that had obviously escaped or been released by some prat who didn't want to look after it any longer. When I phoned the police, they hadn't had a report of a lost snake and they wouldn't come out to deal with it. The RSPCA also wouldn't come out unless it was poisonous! How I was supposed to know that information is another story. The local ranger eventually came three days later, after the snake had appeared curled up on the wall under greenery every day, but it disappeared before he arrived and I still don't know what happened to it. Apparently we don't have grass snakes in Ealing, so who knows what it was.....
