Are minature roses grafted to understock in Europe?

It is my understanding that in the U.S. minature roses are most often own root plants. I would like to know what the common practice is in Europe, especially southern Europe such as in Spain.

The reason for my question is that there was a report of a lot of virus found in minature roses by a Spanish group (see the "Virused Roses in Europe" thread on this foreum).

Hello,

No, the miniature roses are not grafted even in Europe.
They are multiplied by cuttings, be it in Spain other in Denmark -the main source for these roses in Europe-.
It is even the reason why they are very winter-hardy.
It is a pity no nursery do so in Europe for the garden roses as well!

If florist's potted flowering miniatures are mostly cutting grown by horticulturists, commercial nurseries are selling these roses as grafted plants. Much larger than the US own rooted ones.
Another difference is that there is no specialized miniature roses nursery here. Even if we have with Poulsen the leading florist minis breeder.

Here in Europe 95 percent of all roses sold are grafted plants. Probably 99 percent in this country are grafted on multiflora rootstock. I have never had one of my roses grafted on multiflora rootstock, make multiflora suckers!!! I have only seen it happen to 2 roses among the tens of thousands of roses I have seen. Perhaps Louise Odier is one of these roses that do equally well own root as grafted? It is my observation that own root roses in general takes longer time to get established, but once established they are just as good as grafted roses, sometimes even better depending on the cultivar. The discussions about own root vs grafted roses basically comes down to whether a rose grow well own root or better as grafted plants. My Louise Odier roses (grafted plants) grow so well!!!! Both as climber (on a wall support) picture taken in spring so you can see how I trained the canes. It has gotten HUGE during this summer and needs training before winter comes. It will bloom spectacularly next summer. And kept rather low (4 feet high and 3 feet wide) by hard pruning : Louise Odier as low climber in a sheltered spot to the right of door. Austins are not necessarily more disease resistant than Harkness roses, quite the contrary - of course it depend on the location where you garden. I have Compassion, for example, which is a Harkness rose, and in my garden, in a terribly humid blackspot inferno in the eastern coastal region Compasion has been always 100% blackspot free despite the fact that it is planted in a semi-shady spot. Moreover, it gives me wonderfully fragrant flowers. This Compassion came from Pickering, my first one that I discarded was virused was grafted on Dr. Huey. The newer Fryer roses also have decent disease resistance. And there are Meanwhile the Austins must be sprayed here with 1 or 2 exception. Your mileage may vary, since in the middle of the country the blackspot pressure may not be so severe. If you decide to order from David Austin, ask around which roses you should stay away from due to virus problems - as far as I know Sharifa Asma kept coming from them virused. (And if a plant is virused you cannot do anything, it will decline sooner or later, especially in a cold zone.) I would also recommend you to check out the new very disease resistant Kordes roses, most of them will probably be hardy for you and quite a number of them have very good fragrance. I suggest to visit Pickering nurseries website and look at the selection what they have. Check the "winter hardy" roses" cross reference it with the " disease resistant roses" and then again cross reference it with the 'fragrant roses". If that is too much, Palatine has a smaller list - they deliver the biggest bareroots (grafted) plants I have ever seen. Both companies graft on multiflora (this understock started from seed, not from cuttings) so you will get virus free plants. The only contraindication to these roses is if your soils is very alkaline (though you can adjust that with garden sulfur). Pickering's website is open for browsing but don't list the new prices yet. Ordering usually starts in August or September and you can reserve your plants for the proper planting time in your area. It make sense to order early because the best and newest roses (new Austins, new Kordes' like Laguna some Harkness) are sold out fast.

Kim, I will when we get a chance to visit her garden. She is about moms age and either did not hear the phone ringing or was tired from the party yesterday and was not answering this morning. BUT, she left 3 of the roses from the bunch she picked yesterday, she said the rose has been there at least 20 years and is covered in blooms. She has lived there since the 50-60's and is on the Santa Barbara "Mesa" The roses she left are a good 4" across and look like either a very deep rich colored "Peace" or a lighter than Seil's HPF Granada photo and more like the ones from the Olympia Rose Society garden photo. I forgot to do a sniff test, but they were sitting outside with them yesterday so guessing the sniff test would have been nothing to smell. Mom is in love with them, so I will have to try and start a few cuttings of them I should note, I had no more planned rose bush location designated around the house. So no idea where it will end up, but it is from her friends place so it would end up and a special spot. Mom wants to visit one of her other friends rose gardens too, I might need a bigger green house.... (the local Rose Society visited this friends gardens this spring and she says she has hundreds of plants)

In England nearly all nursery supplied miniatures are budded. Some, but not many are grown by micropropagation. The place where you will most often see cuttings or microprops sold is the supermarket; the usual source of these is Holland. Therefore if you are looking for budded, named, specialist (US) miniatures, the only place you can buy them in England is a rose nursery such as C and K Jones.

The reason that I asked this question is that in a Spanish paper minatures had a high rate of virus infection which the authors attributed to pollen infection. They did not state whether the minatures were own root or grafted plants. Has there been any discussion of this finding in Europe?

Authors: M. Cambra, J.L. Martinez-Torres, M.J. Benaches, E. Camarasa, and M.T. Gorris.
Published in: Acta Horticulturae, volumn 246,pages 309-312, (1989).
They found 4.2% of the roses had Prunus necrotic ring spot virus. The breakdown was: 44.0 % of the minatures, 1.1 % of the hybrid teas, and 1.5 % of those budded on Manetti rootstocks. They state: "The high rate of PNRSV contamination in minature varieties seems to be associated to their long existence as opposed to little contamination in the hybrid varieties which were more recently established. The rate of contamination in Manetti rootstock is quite low; this is probably due to the usual nursery practice of preventing mother plants from flowering. Manetti plants giving PNRSV positive, might have been graft-contaminated in the most part."
Later in another paragraph they say:"....since this virus is pollen transmitted (in addition to grafting)."
They studied 4,730 rose samples, which they state "included all varieties and rootstocks most commonly grown in Spain for cut flower rose cultivation. They were collected from a number of nurseries and commercial plantings."
