Writers who should be better known

I suspect we all have a few favorites that we think more people should be reading. On and off I think about Judith Merkle Riley, author of six novels mostly historical but with a very light overlay of fantasy. I love her command of period, her humor, and her vivid drawing of the characters. These books are very satisfying to read.

Another one comes to mind, Gillian Bradshaw. Most of her novels are historical, and most of those are set in the classical world, though recently she has been writing more contemporary novels, even a couple of SF novels. I haven't read all her books, and I haven't loved everything I've read, but several were very good. Still I rarely see her mentioned. I would recommend The Wolf Hunt or for SF, The Wrong Reflection. I have not yet read her Authurian-inspired trilogy beginning with Hawk of May, but I'm thinking of looking it up soon.

Are there any writers you would like to add to the list?

I have sung her praises on here before, but Janice Holt Giles is one of my favorite authors.

The only Gillian Bradshaw books I have read are the Arthurian trilogy, and I remember liking them.

I had forgotten all about Riley - I have read the Margaret Ashbury books and a couple of the others. I must have missed The Glass Oracle so have put that on the library list. She died in 2010. I agree with you about the quality of her writing.
I have somehow totally missed Gillian Bradshaw.

I am still thinking about your topic question. Continuing with the SFF theme, I suggest Guy Gavriel Kay and Charles de Lint.

It is so much easier to think of well known writers who do not deserve their reputation....

Some of your photos are a little too close-up which makes it hard to grasp the context. What's certain is that the excavation needs to be somewhat larger than the finished product and then backfilled. I wouldn't label this overzealous grading. It requires a little extra room to perform the construction. So you see the maximum extent of space you have to build a patio. But there's nothing to stop you from shrinking it if you desire. However, thinking that putting dirt back around a tree is somehow equivalent to putting roots back is just not accurate. An amputation cannot be undone. Putting dirt back will make no difference. In spite of that, the tree will re-grow some roots as that's what they do. The ultimate patio size is a factor of desire and space available, but as patios go, it certainly doesn't look too large. Neither does it look like the ret. wall will be abnormally tall. Its curved shape will add strength. It will be stepping or sloped down in some way to generally follow the earth so it's highest section will not extend for great width. Its height is a balancing act between the patio elevation and the surrounding soil levels. Calculate these out and adjust them as you see fit. Raise the patio too much and you will be filling the bottom end or shrinking the patio size. Lower it and you'll be creating a taller retaining wall. Balance and moderation are the key. As I look at the pictures, I don't see anything that can't be worked out to a decent conclusion... if the right design decisions are made along the way. If this were my yard, I'd prefer the appearance of a nicely detailed mortared stone wall, but that requires more skill and higher cost material than the kind of block you're proposing. Therefore, it would be more expensive. But it would look better, too. What you decide on is a factor of cost vs. benefits as you see it. At the end of it all, it will be imperative that you establish groundcover capable of holding soil in place. This is a key to preventing erosion.

Ginny, I've been following the updates in the local paper... You can too, if you do a Google search to find the Salem News online edition. Every few weeks they usually have an article about what's going on at the site. The basic scoop -- a big developer, the Archstone Corporation had the winning bid for the development of the hospital campus, but the stipulation was that they had to preserve the Kirkbride (that's the big gothic main building). Archstone had its engineers do an initial check of the structure, and reported that with some minor adjustments they could preserve the building. After Archstone got the deal, though, they proposed a plan radically different from their original. Now, they claimed that the age and degree of decrepitude of the Kirkbride would make it impossible to save anything but the front facade. The Danvers town council was outraged (as were many residents). On top of that, relatives of some of the patients who had died and were buried on the campus were very concerned that any development plans that go through must honor and preserve the modest cemetery. The deal was just a big mess. Archstone dropped out. Another company (the name eludes me right now) took it up and apparently has provided a plan that preserves the Kirkbride exterior and its main interior structure... but with major renovations. There are supposed to be lots of new condo buildings, plus use of the Kirkbride and neighboring brick buildings, but I don't know what those uses will be. I presume offices and/or more housing. I drive by there quite regularly, and have always been taken by the beauty of the setting and the drama of the campus structures. I hope that any development that is undertaken preserves the dignity of the place, and its lush green setting.

Alan Lacy, especially his first two books, and a more recenty one "The Gardener's Eye". Henry Mitchell's "One Man's Garden" (Still re-read that book if bored on a winter's nite.) Christopher Lloyd........who threatens to stop on sight and heave certain plants right over the fence and outta your garden because they're soooo obnoxious. two writers out of New York who write on indoor gardening, who's names escape me for now...Hmmmmmmm... Jamaica Kincaid.......only person I've come across who can make me long for something called yellow Russian hollyhocks. A local writer here in S Calif....Tineke Wilders. I just plain like her style. :-)

Hi Michaela, After some discussion, my DH and I decided not to trap-and-release the rabbits. We were going to release them in a nature area close by, but we thought we'd miss them, and were also concerned that they might already have babies in a nest somewhere. We are going with wire cages around everything. Not the best garden look, but we both enjoy seeing the rabbits, and our cats really get a kick out of watching them from the screen room. Maybe we'll get motivated and put little white picket fences around plants- that would look much better than wire, I think. I read all of the comments on this thread, and it's interesting to see that so many folks have "rose playpens", as sultryjasminenights calls them. Rabbits are fairly common critters, I suppose.

Beverley Nichols was a delightful writer from the early 1900's.
I read his "Down The Garden Path" triology and have three others piled to be read.

I'd like to put in a word for Harriet Doerr. Her Stones for Ibarra and Consider This, Senora are fine stories.

She published her first novel at the age of 73.

George Gissing, of course. For fictional accounts of life in the Victorian Era in London, no one beats George. This very fact, however, could be the reason he is NOT as well known as Dickens. Gissing did not sugar-coat his characters. Some folks like their Victorian writings with a nice frosting on top. Just my guess, of course.

I think I've run across only one RPer familiar with Bryher, pseudonym of Annie Winifred Ellerman. Her father was richer-than-sin John Ellerman and she was a contemporary of Stein, Hemingway, James Joyce, and the Paris crowd. Don't let that put you off, though. Bryher wrote, among other things, some very vivid historical novels set in Britain. The ones I've read: Roman Wall (1954), set during the Roman Empire; Ruan (1960), set after the Romans pulled out of Britain; and This January Tale (1966). I'm afraid that most of her novels are out of print but they ought not be.

I seldom see mention of Wallace Breem anymore, but if you like historical novels set during the Roman Empire, Breem's Eagle in the Snow is excellent, I think.

Along with Breem and Bryher, I'd add Naomi Mitchison.

I read Merkle Riley's The Oracle Glass earlier this year and really liked it. I've got her Ashbury books on my wishlist.

I'll second Beverley Nichols, his garden books are delightful. I'm also a big fan of Barbara Pym, who seems well-known here on RP, but not among anyone else I know.

There are almost too many to name.

My favorite book of this year (so far) is Christiane Ritter's Arctic memoir, A Woman in the Polar Night. Published in Germany in 1938, it is still widely-read there. I convinced an acquaintance to read it, and she was similarly amazed by it.

I'm also a big fan of Mrs. Henry Wood (Ellen), a surprisingly skilled and original writer of Victorian melodramas. Anne Hereford continues to be one of my favorite 19th century novels. Is Mrs. Henry Wood truly great art? Probably not. Is she still a lot of fun to read? Absolutely!

I have Ada Leverson's Love's Shadow on my 2014 TBR. She is mostly remembered now as a close friend of Oscar Wilde, remaining fiercely loyal in his sad last years. She was also a writer in her own right. Leverson was also Jewish, which as far as I know, makes her the only 19th century Anglo-Jewish woman writer I've ever heard of.

Some writers, perhaps not well-known, are fortunate to attract cult followings, like Denton Welch, one of my favorite writers. As a of classic British mysteries, I admire the novels of Josephine Tey. I wish she was more widely-read.

Does anyone remember the novel Raintree County? Its author, Ross Lockridge, committed suicide shortly after its publication. It was at one time a best-seller, but I can't seem to find a reasonably-priced copy for love nor money. It appears to be only available as a ludicrously expensive softcover, complete with a truly hideous cover. What a shame this famous book has been allowed to mostly disappear.
