Susceptibility of Alba-Roses

Had someone in other European countries or overseas made experiences with the susceptibility of white flowering Alba-roses for Phragmidium murcronatum(rose rust).Here in Germany it occurs some years ago, but pink flowering species are mostly not affected.

Guten Tag,

Alba-Rosen sind RosenRost-empfindlich im wÃ¤rme und trockene Witterung.Hier in Belgien bekommen Sie nie diese krankheit,
da die Sommer stets genÃ¼gend regnerisch und nicht zu warm
bleibt.
Also gieBen, und vielleicht etwas halbschatten verwenden
(durch pflanzung einer Strauch dabei)

I have both but the only Gallica I could call mature is R. Gallica versicolor so I don't know if it's representative of the whole group. I also have Cardinal Richelieu but it's only a couple of years old. Based on that and somewhere around 10 Albas, I'd say the Albas are way better here. RGV is low and scraggly and suckers all over the place - picture a 2' high x 6' diameter bramble patch. It blooms nicely though. Albas are wonderful and perfect and I love them. ;)

Well, it's definitely not 'Alba Maxima', and I think your assumption about it being 'Great Maiden's Blush' is correct. It's interesting that there have been a few threads about these two Albas getting mixed up by Pickering, going both ways. :-) ~Christopher

Roses susceptible to tomato fungus issues?

I'm preparing to replace all the soil from my raised vegetable garden beds as all of my tomato plants have come down with septoria leaf spot for the past two years. Is it OK to reuse this soil in my rose beds, or could the fungus that causes septoria be problematic for roses too? I hate to get rid of good quality garden soil, but want to be sure I'm not creating more problems by recycling it.

This is an interesting conversation. I have to withdraw, after looking it up, Coraebus rubi as the cane girdler pest that infests my garden. Mine looks and acts like the cane girdler described in this thread. I don't have Rugosas in the garden as they don't do well in my conditions. Roses with a good deal of Multiflora in them seem to be susceptible to cane girdler. This group, which includes the Multiflora ramblers and the Hybrid Musks, have shortlived canes that are susceptible to sunburn and cane girdler. Which factors influence the others I can't say, but I find I need to stay ahead on pruning with these roses, cutting out old canes at the base to encourage the growth of new ones. Hybrid Musks will deteriorate down to nothing if I don't do this. This thread has encouraged me to begin collecting and burning swollen parts of canes after pruning them out, so, thanks to Henry Kuska especially, for the information on life cycle and control of the pest! I've been out recently working in that part of the garden where I have the bulk of my Multifloras, and it's discouraging, and motivating to attack the cane girdler. But perhaps I can discourage them. And the area and its roses do look better after cleanup, and perhaps it's not wholly desperate to think it may turn into a decent garden one day.

vielen Dank fÃ¼r deine Nachricht. Im europÃ¤ischen Forum dauert es immer so lange bis jemand antwortet, da ist man schon froh wenn sich Ã¼berhaupt jemand meldet. Die Amerikaner sind da viel aktiver!
Zu deinem Hinweis muss ich allerdings sagen, dass z.B.die Alba-Rosen im Park WilhelmshÃ¶he in Kassel teilweise auch halbschattig stehen und dort insgesamt hÃ¶here Luftfeuchtigkeit herrscht, trotzdem sind einige Sorten anfÃ¤llig, und vor allem hat sich die AnfÃ¤lligkeit auch geÃ¤ndert Ã¼ber die Jahre hinweg, auch bei gleichem Standort.

Hallo Alois,

Ich habe eine Buch wo Den Rosarium WilhelmshÃ¶he beschreibt ist, mit Bilder. Vielleich die hÃ¶hen Baumen verursachen trockenheit des Bodens. Dies war der FÃ¤lle bei eine franzÃ¶sischer Freund. Aber es ist ja stets mÃ¶glich, daB es Sorten gibt,die ich nicht Kenne, und die empfindlich sind.

Hallo Pete,
da hast Du wohl recht mit den BÃ¤umen. Ich kann mich gut dran erinnern von meinen Besuchen dort, und Frau Grimm, die die Pflanzung mit geplant und angelegt hat, hat auch Ã¶fters auf die Konkurrenz der BÃ¤ume zu den Rosen hingewiesen.

Hallo Alois,

in Kalifornien (in der Naehe von San Francisco) hat der Virus Rosenrost die Gelegenheit ab und zu aufzutauchen. :). Trotzdem, merke ich Rosenrost gar nicht so oft, wenn es auf die Albarosen bezogen ist. Allerdings wurde R. alba maxima einmal infiziert aber bei den Rosen Koenigen von Daenemark und Mme. Plantier habe ich ihn nie gemerkt.

Hello Mike,
thanks for your mail. I drive through GÃ¶ttingen two days ago by train, staying before in Hamburg and Hannover. Hope you are not deeply frozen after that cold period in the north.
