I've just finished this unusual book by Annie Proulx, and feel so haunted by it, and keep thinking about the various characters, as though I knew them personally!
phyllis, I read this some years ago and found the various stories and especially the characters quite dark. I think this is true of most of Proulx's work and had meant to mention it when I read Postcards last year. This, I thought, was more disturbing in that the 'baddie' never got his comeuppance at the end of the book. btw I can't remember anyone mention AP's work here before.
I really loved Shipping News, as I do most of her works. I agree they are pretty dark, but they always stay with me, moreso than lighter characters. My daughter didn't like SN, as they were all such losers, so I don't think I'll suggest she read AC!!!
