Newtlets in my pedalbin liner

I've discovered five newtlets (about 3cms in size)in the pedalbin liner I used to put frogspawn in earlier in the year. I guess they hatched from the hornwort or elodea crispa that I put in to oxygenate the water.
There's only five taddies in there, as well as some water hoglice and I haven't a clue what the newtlets have been feeding on. I'd love to see them grow where they are, but does this mean having to buy food for them and, if so, what would be best? Would it be better all round if I put them in my pond and hope there are no predatory 'jaws'that will wipe them out if I do?
