What is this unsightly plumbing thing?

Hmmm... this has been put on the side of new pond (I don't want to talk about the new pond, it's awful). Anyway, what is this thingy please?

Plumbing supply place says unless I can take one off (have one on tub in unfinished bathroom, have access to the back of that in case gasket slips) and bring it in, they can't help w/o a manufacturer. They don't know if anyone makes one in SS. Price Pfister uses these, don't see why modular factory would use PP drain with Delta faucet. Gerber also uses them. Builder has no idea what factory used/uses. I emailed the plumber who did the onsite work for us, I trust him, he found cracked pipe b/t floors (looks like someone dropped something on it before shipping he said), saved us a *big* mess there. He says these are only used to hold pipe to tub during install, should be OK to remove now as long as I'm careful that gasket stays in place. We want to finish the master bath this year, install a filter for the iron problem, so maybe I'll have *him* remove this one at that time (we're going to replace trim on master tub with color that actually matches the faucet - don't know why they put in cheap plastic "chrome" when we got Delta ORB faucets - not installed since bathroom needs tub deck tiled 1st). I may cut out the sheetrock on the other side of the wall (a cubby for the hamper) and put in a panel for access in this bathroom too. As long as we take care of this now, should be OK. Besides the cosmetic issue of rust, I was worried that the screws would corrode so much that when we needed to replace the gasket, they'd just break off. I didn't loosen them, but after I took the pic, I cleaned it as best I could with it in place. I think hot steamy showers and spray hitting body then bouncing back against spout/overflow are causing this to stay wet most of the time (4 people, 1 shower and the kids like them *hot*!).

I agree with Cook's Kitchen's comments above. And I think you could accomplish that with some planning. For cupboards you could consider having a browse on Craigslist or Kijiji to see if you can find something that would work for your space. Or, just get a front load dryer and replace what you've got without trying to stack them which means reconfiguring the space a bit more. Then you could get a piece of counter cut to go across the top of the two machines and that would give you folding space. I'd get new upper cabinets and go right to the ceiling if you can, that would give you more storage and more workspace on your new counter. That would hopefully mean the stuff piled on top of the cabinets could go inside them instead. Do you have a Habitat for Humanity restore in your area? Or something comparable? If you kept an eye on their stock you might be able to piece together workable solutions for cupboards and counter. Even if you go to a big box store, a piece of formica type counter (it is soooo much better looking that it used to be) can be had for not a large sum of money. You might even find a gently used front load dryer on Kijiji. A new laundry sink but in the same location and you'd have a nice new area and it would likely be more functional than the current setup. Then, if you are still bothered by the shut off valves, one of the suggestions above should do it. Oh....I found some pictures that might give you some ideas. This is kinda what I was saying. A counter across the top of the two machines, gives you some good space. It is handy to have a hanging rod. This one pictured below is a bit on the small side IMO but still very handy. Those baskets are nice and you can hide lots of clutter in baskets. This one is nicely done. With the hanging rod under some cupboards that are higher. Imagine if you could find used cupboards in this configuration (from over a stove). A coat of paint and they could look fantastic. Maybe you could find or make a cute little laundry themed sign like in the photo below and hang it so it covers your shut off valves. I liked this one because they've got a little curtain on the front edge of the sink (easily done with velcro) so that the plumbing and anything else under there - your pails for instance - are out of sight. Open shelves here and a nice counter over the machines. Easily done and use the baskets to control the clutter.

Absolutely Anna! I might have to forego the kitchen renovation to bring the exterior back to its former glory. I'm so happy that it has the original stucco and NOT siding. The former owners were pretty good about preserving its character, though a few things have been changed over the years.

first.. and take note.... let it flower and enjoy it this spring ... the usual default to pruning spring blooming shrubs.. is to do it AFTER it FLOWERs ... you may as well enjoy it one more time.. in case you kill it.. lol ... second.. where are you ... note gal is in the PNW.. and has a near year around growing season.. compared to my ground freeze MI ... what might take a hard pruning and recover for her in a couple years ... might take ten years for me ... so give us a big city name ... next.. i would make sure the prior idiot did not put landscape fabric under the stone .. find out.. and remove it if its there. .it wont be pleasant work ... and if you do.. may as well change to mulch at that point.... as you suggest ... finally .... note gals statement.. that a renovation project like this is one thing out back on your 5 acres .. its a whole different thing in the front of your house .... do you really want the neighbors walking by pointing at your house wondering why the heck you did that for 3 to 5 years .. lol .. this is a prior owners mistake ... and its not a rare nor expensive plant ... it might be time to just get rid of it.. and redesign the whole bed .. and make your own mistakes ... do not make the mistake i did with my first house wasting 5 years trying to tame all the bewildering mistakes the prior owners made.. only to rip them all out years later ... NOT ON THE FOUNDATION .. understand the full potential of what you might plant .. so you dont plant some monster with giant potential in such a small spot.. the prior owner saw this cute little shrub at the store.. and thought... i have the perfect spot for a cute little shrub .... with no real understanding that theses things.. can get as big as the house .. if left enough years ... frankly... id just get rid of it.. dug out in one hour.. and done with ... with the caveat.. that after you see the bloom and find out its not some ultra rare specimen .. and worth a bazillion dollar.. then i might change my mind ... ken

The UV is a UV tube, isnt that why there is a power cable running into it, surely it doesnt utilise the sun's UV.

Kazzie, will send you photo asap, however all of our 'electrics' UV included are 'decked' in under a seat type decking.

Planting has started and waterfall is working... still looks a right mess out there.

I wonder what has gone wrong then. Have you tried to get on from the website? We can get on okay, but I will get sonny to try from work and that will be from a different computer. I have put pics of the garden on there now with all the gravel done and everything. Send me an email if you still can't get on and we will see what has happened.
This message might disappear and I might get told off again for mentioning my website/forum, but I don't understand why as I am no threat to this site and am not a business or anything and still come on here.But we shall see.

Linda... there are parts that I'm hugely relieved about. I like the pond, its a bit weird at the moment because plants need to mature (everything is looking new / clinical). The bit I'm unsure about is the slate chippings... I didn't want grass so they have used different textures (it'll be finished tomorrow so I can show you what I mean).

I like the alpine wheel... it needs to establish though. I've just taken a pic of it and you can see the slate chippings:

Alan, I hope the fern survives, I've never had much success with them in the past. Any tips?

kazzie i completly misssd this thread lol at the uv bit but! looks stunning! imagine what a year or twos growth will do? keep ferns wet but obviously eve is best - no sun scorch. btw did u bury the uv? u need to change the bulb! or do you have a cunning plan? with cunning planting? jo o/

Of the three pics you've posted I can only see the last one of the alpine wheel and the slate chippings. For some reason the first two show as a square with a red cross in it - any idea why this should be?
The slate chippings look perfect - do they continue to the pond?

Kazzie they do like shade, but keep it well watered it should be ok, is the area around it mulched with something?

Jo, there is good access to the uv bulb (from behind), but well hidden.

Tricia, the slate chippings go right up to the pond... its taking some time getting used to them! Not sure about picture problem.

Alan, they've put some kind of peppercorn looking things in the soil... they slow release nutrients (I've never seen them before).

The pond is now finished, but still in a very raw state. Hopefully this weekend I can go to a nursery to get 'dressings':

Thats good, sand i can see its mulched now with the gravel, so just keep it well watered and it should be ok, it might get a bit of rust on it from sun light tho.

Looks nice kazzie, all the stress you got from thinking about it has paid off :)

Kazzie, it does look really lovely now.
Tricia I have found that if a picture is not there I right click with the mouse on to the cross and it opens up a section where one of the catagories is "show picture". If you select that it will show the pic. I don't know if it happens all the time but the last twice I have done this it has worked.
