Does anybody know Harkness Roses in UK? (Thanks for help).

Hello to all friends.

I have read that Harkness Roses is one of the best rose suppliers in the world. Is this correct? Is there any other rose dealer as reputable as them? Please advise.

Secondly, I am looking for rose seeds, and not plants. Therefore, I need rose seed suppliers.

They are at least one of the world-wide known Rose breeders.
I have ordered some roses from them...not very impressive, I must say, but correct.
On the other hand, I really dislike their catalogue....

You may also try David Austin Roses, Peter Beales Roses, Fryers, and so many others !!!
Some messages in the forum give you links to rose-sites with all adequate information on rose breeders and nurseries in the UK.

I agree their catalogue is not the most impressive but they do carry a good selection of roses. If you want a truly beautiful catalogue, I think the Peter Beales one is the best to be had-much more impressive and truly breathtaking photographs!

For sericia, next spring watch the color of the thorns; sericia ptericantha and R. pteragonis are two possibles. Then spend some time looking at many, many pictures of R. canina. In your part of the world it's a widely used rootstock and I'd guess that four or five of yours are slightly different caninas. (This fall they'll have good hips for making jelly). Something else to remember: the garden doubtless now has more shade than when it was first planted. This sort of situation may reduce or totally stifle rebloom, so when you label a rose a once bloomer, just remember that with more sun it might be a repeater.

I wouldn't worry too much about the zone 6 rating. That is the default number that many places like helpmefind.com use when they don't have more definitive information on cold hardiness. Listen to Patty W. in zone 5 (Illinois)--it may die to the ground, but will readily grow back again. Any number of my hybrid teas have to be pruned to a few inches from the ground early each spring--due to winter damage. They just start putting out new healthy growth and in another month or so look absolutely healthy and ready to bloom. They just don't get as tall as some roses in warmer zones that suffer no winter problems--but I never wanted an 8 ft hybrid tea anyway and am perfectly happy with 3-4 ft tall hybrid teas. 'Star of the Nile'-this was my favorite rose 2 houses ago when I grew around 500 different roses. No disease problems at all. I really liked the vigorous yet compact habit (around 3.5 ft x 3.5 feet)and the complex color, with various shades of pink, orange and hints of violet. Excellent fragrance-I don't remember that it faded with time. I just bought one when I was up in Oregon. I hope it does as well at my new home as it did in a previous one. 'Louise Clement'- this plant was a 4 ft x 4 ft bushy shrub. It has a very appealing shade of orange, sometimes drifiting towards coral. The flowers are around 4 inches across with a fairly high petal count. I had it for at least 5 years 2 homes ago, and I just planted 2 of them at my new home. 'Joan Fontaine'. Another Clements rose that I had 2 houses ago. I remembered that I preferred it to the 2 white Austin roses that I had at that time, Fair Bianca and Glamis Castle. The flowers were around 4 inches across and had a high petal count. Healthier than the 2 white Austins that I had at that time. 'The Impressionist'. An outstanding climbing rose that was spectacular in both the Portland Rose Garden and at the Heirloom Rose facility in Oregon. The flowers are large (5 inches) and can be of varying shades of yellow, pink, and orange. Strong fragrance and healthy foliage. I just picked up this rose and another in the 'Impressionist' line, Apricot Impressionist (perhaps a color sport?). Because Clements roses have performed well in my garden, I also picked up Tranquity (blush pink), Memories (pink) and Safari (orange, pink) when they were on sale late this summer.

Thanks, bettina ! I agree with you about P. Beales'catalogue. Though I didn't actually refer to pictures, but rather to descriptions, and the overall presentation...
Though I must confess, the GUILLOT caltalogue (though French, it hurts my feelings to reckon that) has whoups-aargh-pseudo-poetric descriptions that aren't any better !!!

Unfortunately, roses cannot be grown from seed, except for the true species, because hybrid plants do not come true from seed. So, none of the roses in the catalogs can be grown from seed, and no grower will sell you seed.

Were you looking for seed from species roses? I might be able to help you with that. You might also try looking for seed from "Fairy roses" These are a selection of minature roses that are sold as seed, although you can expect variation between individual plants. (These are different from 'The Fairy' and (all/most) named cultivars with teh word "fairy" in their name.

If you are interesed in growing hybrid roses from seed, you may be able to obtain seed from local rose gardens. (Although you'd have to harvest it yourself.) There is a lot of onformation on growing roses from seed on the internet. While seedlings of hybred roses will not come true from seed, there is often a family resemblance. This is a lot like people, where borthers and sisters in a family do not look alike, but do share a resemblance.

I have ordered and received roses from Harkness and have been happy with them. You might also check out Kordes roses in Germany - they are certainly among the top rose growers of Europe. Their catalogue is a treasure of beautiful photos as well as info and they also have a good website. I have many of their roses and they are healthy and beautiful.
