What do you mean?

Petrol mowers?

Excellent.

I have 7 cordless mowers, but they're probably not the type you mean... they are slow-mow: guinea pigs. You just move the grazing arks every couple of hours. ;-)

Unless you have a yard with a lot of holes (in which case you'll want large rear wheels) I recommend a mower with rear drive. You'll get better traction, especially if the grass bag starts to accumulate weight from clippings. You can't go wrong with Toro or Honda or John Deere. All are quality designs, are built with fairly good materials, and will come with reliable engines. I would absolutely recommend against any of the other brands of mowers sold at Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, or other similar stores. As has been pointed out, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. do not service or repair mowers. This is yet another reason to buy a Toro, Honda, or Deere, as most mower shops will have parts and trained mechanics for those brands. Many mower shops will not stock parts for mowers like Yard Man, Task Force, etc. Don't worry about horsepower. Any mower you buy today will have adequate horsepower for most any lawn, unless you let your grass grow to 6 inches tall between cuttings. PLEASE educate yourself about how to maintain your mower, especially at the end of the season as this will save you substantial frustration, money, and trips to the repair shop in the spring. In short, you should learn how to add fuel stabilizer to your gas tank in the fall, and how to replace the mower's spark plug and air filter. All are VERY easy steps to take, even for someone with little mechanical knowledge. Dad's old lawn mower....or confessions of a mower abuser

I guess I'm the Dad in this case! I do remember having an el cheapo power mower (person propelled) when I was a kid (red and perhaps Western Auto) and using it for everything - a field at the rear of the house comes to mind... one day it was 3 feet high, the next it was "lawn". Anyway, everyone is always dumping on Craftsman tools and power equipment. I'm still using my Craftsman Eager One, 5HP, Tecumseh engine, that I purchased in 1984. I don't recall it ever failing to start except when the switch I installed to replace the dead-man handle died. It smokes, uses oil, but still cuts better than my $500 Troy-Bilt. At the beginning of the summer, I ran over a rock and bent the blade so that it was actually digging into the ground. Had to replace the blade plate and blade, but didn't faze the crankshaft or the upper crankshaft shear pins. The only maintenance I've ever done is occasionally replace the air filter, less occasionally replace the spark plug (do clean it annually), and change the oil. I think it is coming to the end of its long life and really hate the thought of getting rid of it. It really needs a total engine rebuild (chassis, etc. is still fine - no rust but lots of scrapes), but I just don't have the abilities. JimC

Any suggesttions on Briggs and Stratton lawn mower problem?

Gee, you'd better not sign up for a heart surgeon class- who knows what would happen then! Sounds like a common issue of the carb diaphragm. Two bolts will remove the fuel tank, 5 screws for the carb. This is the time to clean any debris from the tank. the diaphragm kit is cheap and it is advisable to install a new intake seal that slides over the intake tube (in the end of the carb) at the same time. BTW, when the tank is off, give the intake tube a wiggle to check that it is still tight. You can also take this time to clean debris out behind the tin cover that is between the tank and cooling fins. The diaphragm sits below the supplied gasket on the fuel tank. tighten the screws in a staggered progressive sequence, remount the tank assy to the engine and you will be fine.

Cordless lawnmowers, any good?

I think it will be fine for the job. Make sure it will cut the whole lawn on one charge, anything up to about 500 square metres. The battery is like a car battery, it should be left on charge between mowings and will need replacing every few years, maybe once every ten years with low use. The Concorde 32C is a cylinder mower. This means it is best suited to cutting fescue (quality ornamental) grasses and cutting them short. It tends to tear the "family" rye grasses especially when cutting at longer lengths. It should really be sharpened by a professional every year or two or the cut quality will suffer. You can't sharpen it yourself. It is not good for cutting wet grass, bumpy lawns, or grass that has grown very long. This is the mower for the bowling green look, assuming you have the right grass. If you have a bumpy lawn, a tough family grass, or just like to have the grass grow longer than an inch and a half (the 32C highest setting) then look for a rotary mower. You can get them with a roller to make stripes, you can sharpen them yourself for the best cut quality. Cordless rotaries will tend to be more expensive because they have a higher power, but they will cut just about any grass, any length, wet or dry, without binding, and you can have the cut at 2" or 3" depending on the model.

Make sure you get one that will mow your whole lawn on a single charge. I would say the biggest downside is cost. They aren't very powerful, but they're as powerful as other electric mowers, so they're fine for most home lawns.

I would take a careful look at any rechargeable tool and find out how much replacement batteries are going to cost. These do not have an indefinite life and can cost a small fortune!

I have a battery operated strimmer, the battery lasted about three years. A new battery was nearly as expensive as a new strimmer. You should try and obtain a lawn mower which can be fitted with any heave duty battery if possible

I'd say you're probably better off with a petrol lawnmower if you want cordless use. The new Bosch Rotak 43li however, is a good battery powered lawnmower, featuring new lithium-ion technology it lasts longer than most.

How much grass do you have? I am a big fan of the push mower. Silent, cheap, environmentally friendly and keeps you fit. My neighbour used to spend about 45 minutes mashing up his tiny lawn with a a whiney electric mower during which time the noise was appalling. A hand mower would have taken about 10 minutes and I could have continued to sit in my garden.

We should all do our part to save the enviroment and encourage the growth of the solar and wind power industries. Cordless electric lawn mowers go a long ways towards these goals. I recently purchased the Black & Decker Cordless Electric Lawnmower the CMM1200. I hope my review will help you make a decision about our future.

I'm with Flora - get a push mower unless it's a huge space. Does the job fine.

Sorry, but I don't see why  they are a lot less energy-efficient than a mower with a cord plugged into the mains. Unless you mean a solar-powered mower (lots of magnifying glasses which burn through the grass leaves individually??) or a wind-powered mower (a fast-spinning wind turbine with sharp-edged turbine blades would cut grass very nicely!).
