no newtlets

I have at least 2 male & 2 female smooth newts but no sign of newt tadpoles. The males & females are always following each other and 'prancing' about, but no little ones. Can they still be laying eggs? Plenty of frog tadpoles. I have put some starwort in the pond from a previous suggestion.

Unless you go netting under the starwort, you're unlikely to see them yet. They're very translucent in the beginning.
Don't worry, they'll come. The adults mate later than frogs and you will start to see them more when the froglets start leaving the pond.

'My' newtlets are between 2 and 6mm long now, translucent, and almost invisible. They hide in the silk weed, or lie motionless. If you look closely at a shallow sunny patch in the pond, you can spot them after a while - but it does take very careful looking, preferably lying or kneeling very close to the water!

After reading your posting Kate, I looked up information about the great diving beetle so I could be sure to recognize one when I see it. I noticed a picture of a rather spiky beast at the same time. Anyway, later I was staring into the pond, and noticed some vegatation moving about and realized I had just seen a picture of it--Caddis fly larvae! Never seen one before and was amazed by the complexity of its very intricate glued together tube of tiny twigs. Fortunately not as voracious as your beetles, (who by the way may stretch my 'let nature get on with it' philosophy). Anyway, good luck with the beetle problem.

My pond is teeming with newts (and toad tadpoles)! There were at least one dozen fully grown palmates and smoothies a couple of weeks ago, and recently a whole lot of little ones have moved in. I also find tiny little ones under logs and stones in the garden (they live on land until big enough to mate). Not shy, either - they come right up onto the shallow end. I have no idea what the secret is - my previous tiny pond also acquired newts straight away. All I ever put in my ponds was water, plants, pebbles and gravel. - No fish, though.

Newts and newtlets are carnivorous. By now your bin liner will have built up a population of daphnia and other pondlife like this- you should be able to see tiny thinks moving around in the water. Also mosquito and other fly larvae. If you want to supplement their diet, then go to an aquarium shop and ask what live food they have. Probably daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp. They will eat any of these (although the bloodworm comes in red smelly water). Buy a few bags (priced 30p up to Â£1 a bag), and watch when you empty a bag in. They should soon start eating it. The best probably for the newtlets though is to go in the pond where there will be a winder variety of food provinding you have plenty of pond weed and no filter. although it you have fish they may get eaten. The newtlets and the tadpoles if they are still there MUST have a ramp to get out of the bucket and down to the ground, and the bucket must be placed on grass or the soil so they don't dry out on hot paving. If you have a camera with macro, you can take nice photos of them.
