worried about my acer

My red leafed Japanese maple hasn't come into leaf yet and I'm starting to get worried about it. Around the corner is a similar tree in full leaf. Even the oaks are coming into leaf here in London.

I do expect a bit of dieback every winter but would be devastated to lose the tree. At the moment it doesn't look dead, merely dormant (a few branches have fatter buds than the rest).

Does anyone else have a similar tree and has it got leaves yet?

You could just be in a localised frost hollow or somthing of the kin (they can happen, even with the london climate), and the plant may think its still not quite spring. if fits got fat buds, looks okay and obviously isn't dead (you can use your finger nail to scrap a tiny peice of the bark away and check it is a nice pale/light green colour)give it a bit more time.
Some trees can remain dormant for years, sometimes decades before they bother to grow again (albeit not broad leaves), i'm guessing it'll be fine

I have 2 acers, both of which I inherited when I bought this place so I don't know the exact names. I think my dark red-leaved one is probably one of the acer palmatum dissectum group, as it's low growing and spreads wide with fine leaves, and that's in leaf by now. My other acer, which is upright growing, has its yellowish-green leaves and tiny red flowers out now too.

Okay, off topic, Sally, please, please do a new post, for your reveal. I do enjoy all the white kitchens but for many reasons did not do one myself; we non-Somethin's Gotta Give remodelers need more inspiration photos! Was that Costa by the way? It's gorgeous! On topic: When one measurement changed, I did not think through how that impacted the rest of the plan. Despite research on the web and the store, when I received my microwave trim kit, the cabinet needed to get deeper than planned. I figured out pretty last minute that we now had a tiny unacceptable walkway and we moved the fridge over. We were so busy congratulating ourselves on our narrow escape, but the ride wasn't over. I didn't think about the 3 upper spacious cupboards that would now be microscopic when installed. The cabinet maker cut me a pretty good deal to redo that set with fewer but bigger doors. He definitely went above and beyond, and given what everyone else has posted about contractors, I am so very grateful that it got corrected as it did. Another one I did not think about soon enough was making a Ceiling and Texturing Plan. This is not the same as a Lighting plan, although lighting obviously figures into the equation. We did parts (not all) of this project DIY. We hadn't realized some areas that we needed to mud better because they would not be covered by tile or cabinet (ie above the window) and he had to add some hot mud last minute. Given the contractor we got (a personal rec), that was only a small upcharge. Also, be aware that once your texturing is underway, the room is sealed off. You can't supervise unless you are sealed in too. I would send in a big map or go over it with blue tape that you remind him to pull off before he starts that area. Like another poster, I also did not figure out that I wanted my ceiling light hung from a different position. I will not retexture, my husband is adamant that I find a table fixture that can be hung to correct position by a chain and a hook. It is what it is. The height and exact placement of the hood was not ideal. I was adamant that it be within the manufacturer's specs so that it worked properly. However, there were several inches of leeway within those guidelines. Have everyone pretend to be cooking and see what they think. It should have been higher to avoid my husband bumping his head. He is learning. But that was definitely a mistake.

Rina, I figured we'd use the BJ mix I potted them in to add to the ground when my dil sets them in to give them a little help with drainage. I believe there is grit as well as small pea gravel in that space. Will also let her know to wait for a cloudy day which is foretasted for about two weeks from now. I will take photos once they are established and hopefully do well. Will set the pots outside on the back deck now in partial shade to get them acclimated. Pluto, your border sounds awesome and so easy! I will be holding my breath hoping mine will thrive and survive their first winter.

Your plant is 'suffering' from lack of ligth, and it was also before you got it. Leaves should be much more close together, and color if off a bit too, and it is slanted because it was trying to reach more ligth. It is quite etiolated now, ligth indoors thru the blinds is not nearly enough. Succulents are, in general, high ligth plants. They usually do best with min. 6hrs of sunligth. They are also arid plants, and do not need extra humidity. If you need it, use the humidifier but plant doesn't need it. Often, higher humidity could cause fungal problems. Is there a drainage hole in the pot? What kind of soil is it potted in? How much and how often do you water it? If my plant, I would behead it and grow a new, compact plant. But that would work only if you can assure it will get much more light, otherwise you end up with etiolated plant.

Thank you, Bob! My girlfriend told me it's just cracked itself because of too much "food". This one is my experimental orchid that I planted 2 month ago into ProMix+perlite 50/50. It's still growing, didn't loose even one bloom and growing new roots. I keep all my plants inside. I am in Columbus, OH.

A dark red acer just around the corner from me is is out in leaf. This is SE London. Sorry if this is not what you want to hear :( Normally I check deciducous trees/shrubs by gently scratching the bark and seeing if it's green (red?) underneath. If it's dry and dead...well...time to buy a new one... :(

Personally I would have expected growth by now-especially if you live in London but as some suggest maybe it is just your tree and it's siting.
You dont indicate what form of jap maple it is-Disectum ones are more tender in general.
Also how old is the tree?
It's funny how trees grow. Across from my house there are 6 large oak trees. while 5 are dormant still-well showing no leaf from ground level one is covered in fresh green leaflets.

It's Acer palmatum. I don't know which cultivar, but it's not a low growing one and it's not dissectum. It grows in a sheltered spot close to the house. This is the highest point in the garden and we live on a hill. The tree is about 8ft tall. Every winter there's some dieback on the highest branches, which are taller than the fence and hedges. This time however the main trunk looks scorched by the wind. I snapped some branches off, they were not dead (yet). No signs of the buds bursting on this part of the tree though. A smaller branch on the bottom does look more promising, with fatter buds. Should I prune out the larger trunk/branch to give the smaller one a chance? Or just wait? The tree is probably 10 to 15 years old.

I have two japanese maples and one is placed in the front garden which is quite sunny. The leaves are opening but I would say it is not fully open yet. The one in my back garden (in shade a lot of the time and quite a few degrees colder than the front)has only just got it's buds and no leaves open yet. The one that you see round the corner could just be in a sunnier spot than yours. I would just wait a little longer to see.

As suggested leave your tree for now-I guess there is still a chance it will grow but things are not looking good. Even if you do prune back to this low branch is it worth it? Sounds to me like you may be having to get your spade out.
If you plant a new tree Acer Pal Bloodgood is a reliable variety.

i've got 4 varieties of acer & all 4 has got leaves although 1 has struggled to get the top buds out!

I've got one, three years old in a large pot on my decking. Think it is one of the acer palmatum dissectum group. It's still only 2 ft tall. The main problem is wind scorching which ruin the look of the tree very quickly, despite the fact that the tree is right in a corner between a five foot high solid fence and the rear house wall.

It is not unknown for fairly mature Acers to fail - the reasons are not always clear. There is a dieback disease which other posters have referred to, which usually causes no more than the extremities of branches to die back, but sometimes it seems to get more of a hold and cause large sections of a tree - or even the whole tree to die. I'm afraid it doesn't sound too promising in this case. Has it shown any signs of growth yet?

Good luck from America! My friend and I have been worried about our acer palmatums, too. I have about 50 and I've lost two for sure. Others have top dieback. Some are fine. We had a horrible cold spell after a very warm March. Everything was leafed out when the cold hit. I hope all ends up well. Char Rube
