First baby frog

I found my first tiny baby frog at the weekend, but I think it was from an overwintered tadpole rather than this year's brood. They haven't started growing legs yet.

I also have smooth newt tadpoles. I'll try to upload one to Gallery.

Ms Vickie, Bull Frogs will grow much larger than that little guy.[Though it looks like a female] It is a Northern Leopard Frog you have in the photograph. They can be confused with Pickerel Frogs, as their markings are similar. See the link below for pictures of both types of frog. They're probably toads. Frogs come out of the water but like to stay in there mostly. Toads are able to live mostly on land and you'll usually see them out and about when it's raining. Keep an area moist for them. If you put out a water feature make sure there are rocks or sticks for them to rest on or climb out on. I know they WILL eat soggy bread but I don't know if that's recommended for their diet. If you have toads or frogs rather than tadpoles that means your yard has already given them what they need to get through the first stages of life. I wouldn't worry too much about them. If you see their numbers thinning don't worry, that just means they're spreading out and it'll be easier for them all to fill their bellies. Enjoy them for now!

Hi All, I was doing the Big Garden Birdwatch yesterday when I discovered my first frog hiding in the greenery of my pond. Hope the frogs don't start breeding too early because I'm sure we're in for a spell of cold weather before spring arrives. Guess I'll be protecting the frogspawn again with bubble wrap, like another of our members. Big Kid P.S. How sad I am that last year was very quiet on this site. I wonder if people have emigrated?

I think it is perfectly on-topic. Frogs (and toads) are wonderful garden companions and help control the pest population by eating tons of pests. Of course, the downside is that the frogs also might devour some of the beneficial insects too. With rampant flooding all around us, we are getting tons of new wildlife showing up in the yard looking for high ground, food and water. The million frogs that showed up in May laid eggs so we're going to have a billion frogs by the end of the summer. Early in the morning, there's so many frogs in the garden that you have to walk slowly to give them time to jump out of your path. I wish we could train the frogs and toads to sit on top of the porch light and eat all the little pests buzzing around it at night. Like George, I leave little brushy corners (and small flat pans of water in dry years) for the toads. It is impossible to have too many frogs or toads in the garden, except that a lot of snakes come to the garden to eat them, so the population never really gets way out of control.

WE are not sure whether any of our tadpoles have survived - they are not in evidence so it may be that the fish have eaten them all. Hopefully they are just well camouflaged tho

Ours are just turning and we have quite a few full froglets now. They are brilliant. Trying to hop back up and into the pond.We have also seen some of last years froglets so that is great that they have survived.

Saw first froglet today!! I am amazed how well tadpoles hide. Sometimes it looks as if there are none, and then if I go out at night there can be loads.

Good thing they are good at hiding, as it looks like we have grass snakes too! From what I can tell though, they don't endanger amphibian populations even though that is what they eat. It is all in numbers I guess. We do have loads of young toads now though, many about 2 or 3 seasons old.

Found a nice question answer website, that made me feel better about the grass snake--(I like snakes too, but worried about how much they eat!!)
