Newbie to ponds

Having just moved into a house which had a pond, i find myself totally a novice to ponds.

We have goldfish in it, i have installed a filter with a fountain, but now i want to get rid of the algae and green stringy stuff in it. Im not sure what the best and most economic way is to do this (any advice would be great. I clean the flite bout 1 a month.

What do i do with all of the green sludge and water once cleared... I am a bit apprehensive to throw it down the drain or in the garden..

Help Pls!!

Hi there!
Firstly, if you remove algae from the pond, leave it on the edge so that pond creatures and bugs can crawl back in. You can then add it to the compost heap. What! Not got a compost heap? Start one in a corner immediately or buy a compost bin, or make one out of old pallets.
Now, your pond.
Have you got any submerged plants in? They are called oxygenators because they add oxygen to the water. They are essential if you want a clean natural "balanced" pond. You can buy bunches from garden centres or mail order.
Don't fertilise your plants as the excess nutrients may lead to algal growth too.
You also need pondlife. Things like fresh water shrimps and water louse will eat debris at the bottom. You also need microscopic life eg daphnia, which can do a great jopb clearing green water. If you wanted to you could buy a bag or 2 from and aquarium shop or some pet shops (phone around) cost 30p to Â£1 a bag. They will also sell brine shrimps and blood worms.

Are you feeding the fish or are they just living on whatever they can find? If you feed- watch out that you don't feed too much as this can soon make the water "bad".

Fresh water shrimp? Water Louse? daphnia? Where do i get these from.. and how much do i need?

I will need some oxygenator plants... do i just submerge these in the pond? as for fertilising the plants, i wouldnt know how too... so no worries there..

The algae, do i have to go in and manually remove or are there products on the market that can help me get rid of these?

I think the real problem here is that you are expecting the plants to supply an overabundance of oxygen in the water and this is just not going to happen. Most of the oxygen the plants release is going into the air. Eventually without frequent or continuous water changes that supply more oxygen in the water the water becomes stagnant ie. anaerobic, (sometimes known as black water)which may be great for some bad bacteria which thrive when there is no oxygen but is deadly for fish long before the water becomes cloudy. Eventually the plants will die too,since the combination of lack of oxygen and anaerobic bacteria will kill the roots. You may know of this as root rot. You must supply air to the water in some manner to avoid this. Another problem which comes with just topping off the pond is a buildup of minerals in the water. This can kill your plants almost as fast. Filter material can prevent some of this but not all of it. You may see evidence of this when the plants get brown edges. Some plants handle these alkaline conditions better than others. A spider plant is a good signal plant for this problem. Sandy

We have about the same size system as you, Chris, & Cliff/Joann, 2500 glns, 12 ft. head, not quite as long a run, although we use a skimmer with a small filter, not the bottom drain. Our falls drop the water into a steam bed near an upper pool, then water falls over a dividing falls between the small upper pool and the larger lower pool. The skimmer housing located at the end of the water's run (lower pool) has the pump in the bottom. The only way I've ever seen it done was to PUSH water from the pump up to the Bio-Filter. We didn't use a stand alone prefilter because we just didn't think both a mechanical filter and a bio-filter, a stand-alone bio-filter, was necessary, especially with no koi planned. IMO if you are using a bio-mech filter wouldn't you want to go with the manufacturers recommendation on sizing and pumping through it? I would think there might be an issue or two with how well it filters if you pump to fast or too slow; I could see there being a wide range available though (re: flow rate). We use an Atlantic 1500 BF (wish it was bigger) has plenty of room for the filter media at the bottom where the water typically enters the open-air chamber. Our bare-root and gravel-filled meshpots go on top of the filter media. We actually have two pumps in our skimmer box: one goes to the bio-falls; the other one goes to a discharge pipe right below the weir and creates a rapids effect... gives us a way of changing up the rate of water into our stream bed by turning on and off the rapids pump.

So many nay-sayers! All it takes is a large pocket book, (preferably inexaustable public funding)and a panel of experts to create a "natural enclosure". Ask your most local zoo! My opinion is it could be done, and with appropriate habitats for different species, BUT, it would be expensive and have to be large enough to provide room for the transition of habitats. You would also be adding LARGE amounts of risk to your pets. Predators, parasites, pathogens, and other microorganisms that you would have no control over. Your pets would also have no defense against them, (other than their shell) as they are not indigenous to your area. None the less, you "could do it". You would have to create a large sump either covered, or separated outside the perimeter of the enclosure. My first thought is a shallow stream, where a slow moving, (but enough flow to carry waste away) stream would drain into your sump area through a screen too small for your smallest pet to get through. (Maybe large holes cut into the side of a 55 gallon drum in a grid pattern.) That sump would need to be AT LEAST a 100 gallons, (not necessarily all in one container), and contain a prefilter, mechanical filter, and bio filter to treat your tortoise wastes. Since they would use it infrequently, (after all, they are tortoises)it would probably work fine to treat the water so long as it could get enough time to chemically breakdown, and balance. Your prefilter could be as simple as a mat of plant roots near the drain to the sump, or a settling chamber, which would also pre-treat the waste, while allowing the dirty water to flow through. Properly chosen, the plants would also provide a food source. You would pump from the sump, beyond all the filters, back up to the head of the stream area, and the water would carry wastes back to the sump through the drain system. Experimentation would be needed to set the water flow, then it would have to be adjusted as the plant growth varied. The automatic requirement is the most interesting part of your idea. THAT could get very expensive! Filter back washing to waste, chemical monitoring, water level, etc. is quite a design feat in itself! But if you are willing to monitor the water level, and run a hose a little every few days/weeks, it would not be too bad to have it manually operated. In fact the bigger the sump, and filters, the less attention it should need if designed right. A simple toilet valve could control water level for you, but the supporting infrastructure becomes an issue. Solar pumps are certainly available to move the amount of water you need to move, and most likely, move it often enough to keep the water healthy, depending on system loads. (size of pond exposed to sun, wind, and relative filter sizes, how many leaves get in, etc.) Just like your pets, water features need attention. So you know, there is no such thing as a maintenance free pond, just one that hasn't been maintained, or is not yet completely full of stuff. Nature puts things in, we take them out. We do this to keep the area a pond. In nature, the pond is always changing, and always filling with gunk, getting shallower and shallower all the time. What you proposed is certainly not a simple project. What other proposed is simpler and more practical. It certainly is cheaper, and less risky to use a large saucer, and unless you are willing to create a large water sump, a lot less headaches! You have easy control over the quality and quantity of the water in the saucer, and simple disinfection with a weak bleach solution provides a micro guard. When you decided to take on pets, you decided to devote a portion of your life to their care. If you want them to live in a natural area, you will need to return them to their native lands and set them free. Other than that, continue to care for them daily. They deserve your attention! And you benefit from providing for them. Heck, they're tortoises, you only have about 25-100 years to take care of them! Buck up! -TT

I have used fountains in my pond(s), but on a much smaller scale. I think smaller fountains and waterfalls and streams are more common in the home ponds you see on here. The type of large scale fountain you seem to be talking about is very pretty, but I have only seen it near me in front of more commercial buildings. I have seen it in front of an upscale apt complex near the entrance, and in front of a commercial building with professional landscaping. While there are all kinds of ponds, most here seem to have fish and/or be water gardens, and people like to see the fish. I have small ponds so I have only ever used a small multi tier fountain nozzle and a "bubbler" fountain. Spray leaving the pond from the wind is always an issue. So for that reason only, I would consider going with the smaller one. Because if you find the wind blowing the spray out of your pond, it will drain your pond and make upkeep difficult. Since you can't return it, that would be a waste of money. That is another reason people with smaller ponds probably don't use them a lot. And most "backyard" ponds are probably smaller than yours.

also what do i do with regards to frog spawn, and do i need to change the pond water from time to time, e.g a few buckets out and then topped up again with fresh water?

Oxygenators: usually sold as weighted bunches of about 10 stems. Either just bung in, or take off weight and tie to a stone with string and bung in, or take off tie and plant in gravel.
Algae: If you have tadpoles, they will eat some. If it gets too thick you may need to carefully take some out (watch out for stranded tadpoles).
Once you have plants in that use up nutrients in the water, you shouldn't need to do water changes often if ever.
Shrimps, lice, snails etc: Have you got a net? When you get one, scoop from the water and from the bottom, tip it into a white container eg ice cream tub, and take a long look. There should be lots of things crawling about. If there is nothing, try to find someone else with a pond (preferably a wildlife one) and ask for a scoop or 2 of their pond. But if you do this you need to beware of introducing fish or frog disease or invasive weeds.

Welcome to the joys of ponding, and thanks dampflippers for the reminders about daphnia etc.--I forgot they help with green water.

You will tempted by all sorts of products promising wonderfully clear water and the like to improve your pond---spend the money on good native plants instead and trust nature to find the balance. And algae is food too, and if you are interested in wildlife in your pond then they do need places to hide and food to eat! So think of algae is something which is managed, rather than got rid of completely--and load of critters can live in a handful of blanketweed, especially at this time of year.

Don't forget tapwater is full of chemicals too so should be used sparingly and not seen as 'fresh'. I have a water butt not too far from the pond which I use to top up in warm weather, and only use tapwater if I have to.

One big mistake I made early on was using a cement brick to weigh down some plants--the cement is to healthy pond water what kryponite is to superman!! The plants hated it and turned yellow and I did have to work hard to get the PH back to normality.

Go out with a torch at night (watch where you step), and you will really get to see what is in there, and also that you are seeing only the tip of the iceberg so to speak! The longer you look at a clump of weeds for example, the more you can see what is very well hidden (caddis fly larvae, various bugs, tadpoles, snails eggs, very shy newts--perhaps not newts if you have fish-- dragon fly nymphs, tadpoles and the like.)

I have had very good plants from bromfield aquatics--they are small to begin with but have grown better than more expensive bigger plants from garden centres. Just make sure you know when they are being delivered and arrange for the plants to not taken back to the depot--that happened to me and I had goo 5 days later!! Indeed, always have had better luck with younger smaller plants no matter the source.

So enjoy your pond, be patient, and don't fiddle too much with mother nature!!
