Reader's Paradise

Novels of Spain

My mother is taking a trip to Spain and she would like to read some novels either by Spanish authors or set in Spain. She would like them to be a "page turner" if possible. She has read The Sun Also Rises. I couldn't think of anything beyond some old classics that didn't interest her.

Any ideas would be appreciated,

Summer of the Spanish Woman by Catherine Gaskin is set in Spain, and as I remember it, it was an easy read. Isn't Name of the Rose set in Spain as well? NOT an easy read.

Pam....Yes I bet they mean Philadelphia cream cheese as well, seeing as it sounds like that's in a starter section of the menu which looks like bruchetta, translated into English. Guess we'll just have to go there and try it out. I can't imagine what they mean by American sauce but since they are French, it could mean anything they imagine Americans use LOL. We almost went in there today as we were out walking and wanted to have a late lunch after doing some errands nearby. The place is very pretty inside with white linen, lots of fresh flowers everywhere, good glassware etc. Wolf is interested to try this place because they have duck patÃ© as well as duck breast so we may go soon to try out the small starters or dinner crepes. I've heard that the food is very good. And if we do I'll certain find out what is 'American sauce.' Pam and Gina it's true that any photos of another place are interesting to those who don't live there so please do add or take pictures of what you may consider humdrum or boring: a rusty gate latch, a pile of snow against a patio chair, rain on a window etc. can turn out as beautiful photos. I think one secret to good photos is to stop looking at the big picture and start zeroing in on single small details because they too tell a story, often better than a panorama. SharonCb

What do you think of Hemingway's writing?

Somewhere I have a biography of Hemingway, by an author whose name won't come to my mind, that includes a photograph of toddler Ernest with his older sister. In it they are dressed almost identically in frilly dresses and Ernest's hair is long and luxurious but without a hair bow like his sister had. In the early 1900s it was the style to dress infants and toddlers of both genders the same way, and sometimes it's hard to tell which gender a child was, but there's no mistaking Ernest was male in spite of the way he was attired. There was something in his eyes and his expression that broadcasted 'male'. I have been accused of having a little too much sympathy for Hemingway by some of my female friends and family members who do not like his masculinity and his terse writing style. So be it, I am sympathetic. I have a feeling that a lot of his persona and bluster was put on, because he felt insecure for some reason -- and to have your world changed as his and so many young men of his generation was by war is enough to make a person feel insecure or hollow or dead inside, I think, and it naturally came out in his writing. His style is journalistic, no doubt about that: you use as few words as possible to convey the most meaning as possible. I've always been very fond of adjectives, adverbs and subordinate clauses myself, so when I was no longer constrained I returned to using them with glee. However, Hemingway and some of the other 'moderns' were trying to distance themselves from the elaborateness of Victorian prose and cut things to the bone in doing so. Virginia Wolff did. Gertrude Stein, Hemingway's great friend, did. Hemingway's style, though, may not have been his originally. There is much debate that his long-time editor, Maxwell Perkins, might have been the instigator of the Hemingway style. At any rate, Hemingway liked Perkins's advice and adopted it as his own thereafter, even to the point of trying to out Hemingway himself. It got to the point that it was worthy of ridicule, I think (and my thought is hardly original). As Carolyn has, I've read The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, and For Whom the Bell Tolls and I liked all three. But I also liked The Old Man and the Sea. I am fond of To Have and Have Not although that's considered a weaker novel by literary critics. I love A Moveable Feast and can reread it almost any time. Hemingway wrote the introduction to Kiki's Paris in an exuberate, un-Hemingway fashion that shows, I think, Janalyn, that you are right: it was the happiest period of his life.

I finished Homecoming by well-regarded Australian author Kate Morton. I then went to check if I had read any others of hers, and found my assessment of The Forgotten Garden (aka The House at Riverton) which concluded 'I don't think I will bother with any more'!! It was an interesting story about a 40-ish Australian woman living in London who flies home to Sydney after her grandmother, who brought her up, had a fall. She is an investigative journalist who finds out about a tragedy in her family's past, but in doing research on the internet, finds there was a book written at the time about it, and gleans all her information from that. Of the main characters, the grandmother was a bully who considered everything had to be done her way, the mother was a cipher for most of the book, and the journalist character was OK. The mystery was done well. However, the author had done a lot of research, and the reader was made to pay. There was so much extraneous information, long descriptions of the birds, the trees, the weather and so on. But most annoying were the factual mistakes, many of which should have been avoided by the above-mentioned research. Since part of the book was set in the Adelaide Hills near where I live, I picked up on them, but I suppose the out-of-town reader wouldn't have noticed. I also finished listening to the wonderful House of Niccolo books by Dorothy Dunnett.

If she is looking for a lighter read, I recommend Chris Stewart's "Driving Over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucia". I found it quite entertaining in terms of someone relocating to an out of the way village and all the cultural clashes that ensue. It's rather in the same vein as the Peter Mayle books about southern France.

Thanks for these suggestions. I haven't read anything by Arturo Perez-Reverte, but would his work qualify? Anything particularly worth recommending?

A Woman Unknown; Voices of a Spanish Life a memoir/travelogue written by Lucia Graves who grew up in Franco's Spain. She is the daughter of Robert Graves and the translator of the aforementioned Shadow of the Wind .

Is James Michener's Iberia still in print?

Isn't Name of the Rose set in Spain as well? NOT an easy read.

no it is set somewhere in Tuscany or Abruzzo I don't remeber , here in Italy anyway

I think most of Perez-Reverte's books are set in Spain. The two notable ones that come to mind as not being set in Spain are Queen of the South and The Club Dumas. Well, parts of those books occur in Spain but quite a lot of the action happens somewhere else.

And yes, Shadow of the Wind would be my recommendation as well.

Oh, I'd definitely recommend Perez-Reverte! I also know I have somewhere on my shelves a novel about Alhambra (a place I have wanted to visit for a long time) - can't find it yet tho.

Perez-Reverte is wonderful. My favorite of his is The Flanders Panel, also set in Spain. I'll second the recommendations for Shadow of the Wind and Driving Over Lemons, too. Though completely different from each other, both are very engaging.

Second, or third, Perez-Reverte.

Certainly encourage your mother to check out the Alhambra and the Gereralife (the gardens there). Tales of the Alhambra by Washington Irving is fun. I bought my copy there.

I haven't been to Spain for many a long year, but I do remember reading Iberia (well, parts of it anyhow) before going and loved the description of the mesons (sp?) off the Plaza Mayor. These are cellar and cave bars with music and Sangria and nibbles. I checked them out and had a wonderful time. If your mother isn't into drinking and singing she still might find find some guidance in the novel.

But honestly, I always answer this question for myself by going to Rick Steves reading list for his tours. To get one ready for a trip, he includes fiction, non-fiction, movies and music.

Iberia most definitely. Also Death in the Afternoon and The Dangerous Summer by Hemingway. Spain is one of my favorite countries to visit. I just found out that I have a business trip to Madrid in May, and I am planning a vacation around it.
