For the shrub category, Dendromecon Harfordii is a nice choice. I won one about 10 years ago in a drawing. Didn't know where to plant it, so I stuck it out in the middle of my backyard. It's now as large as a midsize sedan. It has silvery green leaves and produces yellow fragrant blooms that are similar in shape to California poppies. Bloom is heaviest in Spring but it flowers most of the year. All I have to do to it is look at it. I never water it. I suspect it may get some benefit from a slow soaker I have on my Crape Myrtles about 8 feet away. An aromatic choice is Cleveland Sage. It's my favorite filler for dry borders. It's a hummingbird magnet.They are super fragrant after a rain. If you want a specimen plant that will eat your yard, Matilija Poppy is a gorgeous choice. Though it does need some water once mature, There is nothing like the grace of California Sycamore. They smell good too. It's name notwithstanding, Arizona Cypress is a Cal native that you can find in big box stores from time to time. Beautiful bluish foliage. It's happier with some water. Tecate Cypress is a recent introduction to my garden. It has airy gray green foliage. The jury is still out on it for me since it's not filled out yet but it seems happy with the water the Crape Myrtles get nearby though I do not directly water it.

I'd have to go with Arundo donax 'Peppermint Stick' and Panicum virgatum 'Northwind.' 'Peppermint Stick' isn't as big as the species, and is really startling with it's variegated foliage. 'Northwind' is, by far, the most erect and upright Switch Grass, with it's blooms blended into the top of the foliage. Mine will hit 6' this year.

The wall faces SW, so it gets a fairly good amount of sun. Not quite full sun, but still a high amount. I'd prefer something that does not need to be brought in during the winter. My grandmother used to have some beautiful climbing roses, does anyone have experience with those? Thanks again.

Hello. I am a beginner gardener, who has been learning the hard way. My home is .22km from the sea (.15km from the beach)in Central Italy. I have a roof deck and have begun to plant in containers. The problem is the wind brings sands from the beach onto my terrace. I had purchased a Jasmine Official, which became scorched from the sea alt carried in the wind. My lemon tree and my herbs (rosemary, lavender, tarragon, parsley) are all growing well. I am wondering what plants I can grow which will not become scorched by the sea salt. I would like to plant a few varieties of Roses to climb a lattice fence at the side of the terrace. I am looking for a Climbing or Rambling Rose which is resistant to sea salt scorching. Any suggestions? If you have any advice on the Rose, I would greatly appreciate it,as well any other suggested plants (Jasmine, Bougainvillea, etc.) for growing near the seaside. Thank You.
