koi injury

fished a six inch showa out tonight into hossie tank. (if i could spell laceration i'd use it) dorsal fin split between 1st and 2nd errr bone - whatever theyre called. but with an ugly looking (shallow) wound too. cant figure what could have caused it? hes swimming round happy enough and feeding but cant figure the cause of the wound? plant pot? pump casing? cant be the net - its a dorsal fin he would have to have jumped backwards into it! any natural predators capable of this? any ideas please i'm stumped???

Split fins are a common ailment, and often take the longest to heal up, if they ever do! they can be caused by netting and they can be caused by a split pot in the pond too, but but a friend of mine had one (a nice ochiba) split in a cat attack too which also got badley infect and he lost the fish, split fins can be a real problem, so keep an eye on it.

As for treatments, there are a few on the market, some people have even sown the fin back together and it has healed fine, but in most cases it will spoil the look of the fish.

thx ajc. i gave him a salt bath and gave the wound a clean with a cotton bud. he was very calm and is now swimming around the tank quite happily and feeding. will keep an eye on it and look into possible treatments. first priority is the wound at the mo then the split fin later i think. o/

You don't say how many fish there are or how big. When there is such a small volume of water there is very little oxygen for the fish. The big ones usually die first. The small one likely had other injuries from crowded conditions and panic. There may be further deaths. I lost 14 large fish like that several years ago. Another 20 survived.

There's 2 ways to look at it. Since they do it they must want to. Call it play, looking for food, or trying to get off parasites would be hard to tell. Some people do try and make pond a little more interesting for Koi. Others keep them in basically a swimming pool. We have no way to tell what makes them happy. We tend to anthropomorphize but that can be misleading. The other way is how most keepers seem to look at it, protect the fish at all costs. They would probably see the sand as an abrasive which could cause injury or maybe see it as a sign of parasites and test the fish.. To me a Water Garden isn't a Koi Pond. A Water Garden is a more interesting place for fish imo. It's also a more dangerous place, but doesn't have to be overly so for the most part. I've never heard of adding sand being a required thing, never heard of it being deadly, but never heard of anyone do it either. So I think it's just your call.

Quibloid. the first thing you have to do is remove the koi from the pond into a 'hospital tank' where you can attend to the cuts. You will have to use an antibiotic treatment to stop infection in the wounds. Your local pond specialist store or veterinarian can advise you on that treatment. Since you live in the UK I'm not sure what did the damage to your fish? Here in North America, that kind of wound can be caused by a raccoon, but you do not have them over there. Maybe a fox, heron or even a cat got at your fish. There is a UK pond forum [still with Garden Web] where you can obtain information that could be more relevent to your situation. Ummmm......both interesting theories. I know nothing about ulcers in koi. I just checked our pond water. The pH is at 7.5 which is typical. Even our well water is always in that range. Ammonia tested out a 0 ppm; again very much the norm for our pond. I collected a water sample in a clear glass jar and there is no discoloration in the water. We've had a good amount of rain this year so mother nature has been providing us with fresh water for the pond pretty frequently. The only thing different this year is that we have almost half the pond covered by water hyacinths and a small water lilly. As we have had 90 degree sunny days all summer I allowed the hyachinths to sprawl over more of the pond than normal just so the koi had some relief from the hot sun. Additionally I was under the impression that hyacinths help improve water quality. Our pond is on the smaller side; about 800-900 gallons. I was able to examine the fish pretty well while she was still alive and in the water. The "puncture" wounds did not have any redness. They looked much the same as the photo. The theory of a predator attack is also puzzling. Once the fish had died (12 hours later), I brought her in to the kitchen so I could thoroughly examine her. There are no other wounds on the other side like you would expect if something grabbed her. There were no scales missing. I am an adult woman however I have small hands. My husband estimates the punctures were about 1/16th of an inch in diameter. The one directly behind the pectoral fin looked rather deep. We live in eastern PA and have a population of raccoons, bears, sharp shinned hawks, and an occasional eagle. This particular koi loved to hang around under the water fall very close to the edge of the pond so she certainly could be easy prey. Waterbug and Sleepless, I truly appreciate your insight. Any other info is welcome. If I need to make some changes to ensure the health and safety of our koi, I am certainly open to any suggestions.

If you do ever need to carry out more intensive wound treatment on a fish, use the Kusuri Anesthetic. It's wonderful. You have a still fish to treat, no struggles or panic, just a calm sedated fish.I was amazed at how effective it is and how calm the fish is afterwards. It's got to be better than trying to treat a flapping panicked fish, better for you and the fish! Mind you make sure you have a bowl of fresh pond water to put fish in after treatment- 1st time I didn't and ended up putting her back into the water with the anesthetic in it. I panicked a bit when it seemed to take ages to wake the fish up, but of course she'd had another dose of anesthetic. Good job the fish couldn't sue!

good point about the fresh water after anesthetic. although it wasnt required this time. we have used an nt labs one to good effect. i was told as a general rule it should take about the same time to wake up as it took to go to sleep. so if it takes longer? panic lol personally think its more stressful to the owner than the fish d:(

Annabel, sowing them up is no different to us being sown up, and given the choice of sowing up a badley slpit fin or cutting it off completely, or an infection getting right upto and into the muscle and the fish dieing i would try sowing first, cosmetics are not so important as saving the fish, sowing the fins back together takes a lot longer than it does for humans to heal, but if it saves the fish and the fin its worth it i think.

so how are your sowing skills then annabel? :)
